It depends on the form you are referring to. The following forms are 2D barcode enabled:

  • I-864 (needed for AOS in most circumstances...i.e. family-based immigration)
  • I-131 (Optionally filed with I-485 to get AP)
  • I-821
  • G-28

If using those forms, you need to either entirely fill them out electronically (so it generates a barcode with the info), or leave them blank and fill it in by hand. Mixing electronic filing with handwritten items may result in them just scanning the barcode and not noticing the handwritten fields, resulting in those handwritten responses not being recorded.

Well mine didn't have a Barcode at all. Even though I typed it in on the computer. Is it still OK?

Which form(s)? I've noticed only Adobe Reader generates the barcode properly...other PDF readers do some quirky things instead.

 

But if there's no barcode when you print, it shouldn't matter whether it's typed or handwritten...it'll need to get hand-keyed anyway.

The i864 and the i131. Neither of mine have the barcode. I guess I could try redoing it with Adobe Reader again. But if it's not necessary I'd rather just leave it.

Hmm weird...that screenshot in my post above is from Adobe Reader on the file I downloaded from the USCIS website minutes before posting it. I'm using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC 2017.012.20098.

 

Anyway, if the barcode isn't showing when you print, they need to hand-key the data anyway so you're fine.

I'm confused too about the barcode. I've had printouts  of form 1-131, with and without the barcodes. 

I will hand fill my current re=entry permits for my family, without the barcode.

Also the expiry date, at top right hand corner has lapsed.

I read that the bottom left hand corner date is the applicable date, which reads on my form 12/23/16 N.
