No information found in SAVE system

Hi everyone,

 

My wife are having a nighmare getting her a SSN.  We originally applied for one via the DS-260.  We waited three weeks after she arrived in the US without receiving a SSN.  So we went to the local SSA office and discovered that they could not find her in their system.  In addition, we could not apply for a SSN at that time because her information in SAVE was "incomplete."  

 

The clerk said she would send a request to USCIS to verify the information and if everything was good(which may take 4-6 weeks), they would issue a SSN.

 

How does this happen?  More importantly, what can we do to speed this along and stay vigilant to ensure there are no additional problems. A SSN is pretty necessary to assimilate in the US.

Most likely they keyed something in incorrectly (either at the SSA or at POE). Either way, it's manual verification time and you just need to wait it out. There's no way to speed it up.

The only thing you can do is check that her i-94 info is correct and if it is not, contact your closest deferred inspection site (DHS) and have them change it. You can also double check that the SSO employee is entering the information exactly as on the i-94. Other than that you just have to wait... I was a K1, granted, but the wait for SAVE manual verification was for me 10 weeks. USCIS that handles those errands are swamped and there is no way to contact them. Everything has to be done through the SSO. I think I called the SSO about 5-6 times before finally it had come back to them from USCIS.

They can have them try again even though the manual verification has been sent.

True. If the name was miskeyed at POE, they will still need manual verification though. Usually the SSA is pretty good about it and probably tried it a few times...whereas CBP probably typed it once quickly and that was it. =.=

I can add that in my 10 weeks I contacted deferred inspection in Houston (they were available through email) - they double checked everything and said there were no changes needed to be made at the time. That communication was over in 5 days, but I have no idea about other sites - and some you'll have to go in in person.

no deferred inspection can fix that - and the database will update and they can go again to SSO.

Again true. Touchè. Getting it fixed, if that is the issue, is for the best anyway.

No I-94 was found, however since this is for a CR-1 Visa, there should be no I-94.

I did manage to find something in SAVE using the case check using her passport number.
Says it the case has been returned to Maryland - SSA.  Any ideas what this means?

haha True. I misread DS-260 as the DS-160 so an immigrant visa didn't jump to mind.

My wife went through this exact same process and timeline, 3 years ago. They're not lying when they say it will take 4-6 weeks. It's an accurate estimate. Keep checking the SAVE check and once it's straightened out then the status will change. At that point you can go down to the SSA and they'll give you the # ahead of the mailing. Good luck.

Thank you.  Do you happen to remember was the status was when in changed to the point you were able to go down the SSA?

I don't remember, but I think there was a thread or two that talked about the SAVE db statuses in the SSN forum here at VJ. Not sure if they were stickied to the top of the page, though.

Go to CBP deferred facility near you (find the list of places on cbp.gov) and have them verify what's in SAVE and update it if needed. That will get correct info to SSA and card in hand. 

 

Make sure to bring passport and any other paperwork you have.

Sorry about the i-94 confusion
As @milimelo said though, it's about what's in the system, whether it's printed on an i-94 or not. So double checking the entry is still something that you can do at deferred inspection. That and as said, going back and actually looking at what exactly the employee is typing in and in what field. I've seen so many posts where they entered a middle name where there was none, spelled wrong etc etc. Good luck

Also the SAVE entry just means that the electronic request bounced back when the SSO made the inquiry about you using that information. So, it seems to me that some information was not entered correclty in your record or not complete from CBP's side..  since you are able to find the inquiry that the SSO made into the immigration status - it seems they should have entered the name correctly and identifying information in the same way as you...

 

(by bounced back I just mean that they got a response, whatever that response was, it always says Maryland, since that is the headquarters, but there is nothing you can do to contact them or that they could help you with. Been there tried that..)
