My Fiance andmyself are hoping to get married a week after my arrival - I am hoping to leave the SSN stuff til after i get married as i understand that the system needs 2 weeks to have all the details logged. Due to a series of events I am having to wait til July to leave UK ( there are several people whio we want to be able to be present and as holidays travel arrangements have to considered ) - to ensure everyone who we wnat to be present can be it is likely we will get married 7 days after entry - will this cause any admin problems later ?

All advice gratefully received - i appreciate a sharing of experiences is ver helpful

You have 90 days after entry to get married.... You MUST get married before you can file AOS....

YMMV

I think, despite the topic title, the question is more about SSN application - right OP?

I've seen things around here about the SSN process and timing. You needn't wait until marriage and AOS to apply, right? Or do you?

(not there yet, haven't digested all that part of the process - focusing on CSC frustration right now and Embassy preparedness!)

I-129F/K1

1-12-07 mailed to CSC

1-22-07 DHS cashes the I-129F check

1-23-07 NOA1 Notice Date

1-26-07 NOA1 arrives in the post

4-25-07 Touched!

4-26-07 Touched again!

5-3-07 NOA2!!! Two approval emails received at 11:36am

5-10-07 Arrived at NVC/5-14-07 Left NVC - London-bound!

5-17-07??? London receives?

5-20-07 Packet 3 mailed

5-26-07 Packet 3 received

5-29-07 Packet 3 returned, few days later than planned due to bank holiday weekend

6-06-07 Medical in London (called to schedule on May 29)

6-11-07 "Medical in file" at Embassy

6-14-07 Resent packet 3 to Embassy after hearing nothing about first try

6-22-07 DOS says "applicant now eligible for interview," ie: they enter p3 into their system

6-25-07 DOS says interview date is August 21

6-28-07 Help from our congressional representative gives us new interview date: July 6

7-06-07 Interview at 9:00 am at the London Embassy - Approved.

7-16-07 Visa delivered after 'security checks' completed

I-129F approved in 111 days; Interview 174 days from filing

Handy numbers:

NVC: (603) 334-0700 - press 1, 5; US State Department: (202) 663-1225 - press 1, 0

Marital status has nothing to do with SSN# application. I applied for mine two weeks after entry and I was married by then and I changed my name at the same time.

Its been said its not a good idea to do both at same time - perhaps not, but I did anyway

hi there when my husband entered the U.S on his second day here we went and filed for his SSN, however 1 month later we still had no card and when we did my name change we asked about it. well we had an a-hole that waited on us the very first day that didn't process my husbands paperwork. however the nice ladies the day of my name change helped us and we had both of our cards in our hands within 7 days... so no marriage has to take place, to get SSN. just enjoy each other and have lots of fun. its a painless adventure best of luck!!

Hi there. We got married April 15,07 in california but we're living in NY. I wasn't sure if i could apply for SSN yet since i've heard that i have to bring the certified Marriage certificate with me. And since we mailed the form to the registrars office it takes 6-8 weeks for them to mail the marriage certificate to us.

Do u think i could apply for SSN still?

Is it ok to file for AOS 6-8 weeks after (depending on when im gonna recieve my marriage cert.), even if my k1 would expire by then?

please help.thanks

Your K-1 technically "expired" the moment you entered the US (since it is a single use visa). As long as you married within the 90 days after entry you will be fine. There is no absolute requirement to file for AOS within the 90 day "window" though it is best to get it done as soon as you are able.

YMMV

When you get your certified marriage certificate, take it to your local SSA office. You can't apply for one without it now that you're married. :)

Yes, it's ok to file AOS after your K1 has expired. Several on here have done this but many will tell you to do it ASAP. Until you do you will be out of status. Once you've filed and USCIS receives the application you will be AOS pending.

Hope this helps.
