Traveling the world with a conditional green card

Hi there,

My husband and I are considering traveling the world for awhile after I receive my 2-year green card from marriage. How do we go about doing this in a proper manner?
From what I understand I can't travel more than 6 months outside of the USA, however we can hop around during that time in other countries each year... right?
How does a permanent residence work? If I'm renting our place out during our travels it can still be used as our "permanent residence", right?

Your "permanent residence" needs to remain in the United States.  In other words, you must be spending more time within the US than out of it within any given 12-month period.  Permanent residence doesn't mean that you just own property in the US (and are renting it out)...it means that YOU are permanently residing in the US.

Since you're considering an extended trip, even if you figure there's zero chance you'll be physically out of the U.S. for 365 days in a row, it might not be a bad idea to consider getting a re-entry permit:

That way, if you do end up deciding to stay out past 365 days (or are forced to due to illness or other emergency situation), you can still re-enter as long as the permit is valid (typically two years from date of issuance, though if you have a conditional GC, the re-entry permit would likely expire when the conditional GC does).

As @Going through said, the general rule of thumb is more time in the US than outside in a 365 day period.  Keep in mind that a GC is not a multi-entry visa, it is for those that permanently reside in the US.  That being said, world travel is certainly fun, I hope you have a great time!
