No, alt-right was a term coined by the far right to make themselves more appealing than the previous label, white nationalists. They named themselves. They are a clearly identifiable movement with a defined ideology.

Alt-left is a term also coined by the same group to imply that a parallel group with similar ideology exists on the opposite side. You will not find an alt-left group anywhere, ever. It is a term applied loosely to various liberal groups who do not share a single unifying ideology, and primarily exists in social media and right wing alt-news sites. The alt-left is a construct.

Ok, so extreme Left.  Are you saying there are no extreme left wing groups that worship Marx?

Left wing groups exist. There is no unified extreme left movement that is comparable to the alt-right in the USA at this time.

So it that then, sure the extreme Left groups are there, but they are so small and inconsequential that we ignore them.  Is that how Antifa, Occupy, and BLM came together?

So yes, there is no alt-left "just like" the alt-right, as was claimed in a prior post. We can go in circles all day but that is a fact. It is not going to change.

Facts are useless, per the OP, when used against the alt-right and defenders of the alt-right. The responses in this very thread support the OP.

How is that you expect us "leftist s" to give you the time of day on these wild imaginings of leftist conspiracy when you won't take 10 minutes to review the article above?  You don't even subscribe to the alt right beliefs. What do you have to loose?

Actually your pathetic excuse for a presidential candidate Hillary Clinton started using the term alt right. Maybe you are correct that there isn't an alt left anymore because many main line leftists support the violent hate filled extremists in their party like antifa. The main line right on the other hand disavows these types of groups and puts them on the fringe where they belong.

I already conceded the no "alt-left" label and clarified it to be extremist left wing groups.  As @jg121783 mentioned earlier, the mainstream left seems to embrace these extreme Left groups whereas the mainstream Right appears to marginalize the extreme Right groups.  No one will ever be able to eliminate extreme groups from either side, but for one writer, regardless of credentials, claims one side is far worse than the other, that is when I start questioning their opinion.

Actually Steve Bannon bragged that Breitbart was the portal for the alternative right way before

If you would invest the time to read the article you might see this not as a left / right political disorder but as something apolitical where young folks get sucked into a destructive lifestyle, frequently around personality cults. The phenomena is very similar for young men getting pulled into Isis and other groups.

There is no political discussion here, we have a disease on our hands.

Where was that claimed in the article? Which sides are you talking about?

When the OpEd writer analyzes one side only, then it will be political.  The article never touched on any research or analysis of the extreme groups on the other side.

This had nothing to do with the article, but was instead a reply to a debate we are having regarding extremist groups on both sides.

You want there to be two sides to make it easier to make this a political discussion.  That is the point of the article that you refused to read , this is beyond politics

What do you have to loose by reading it? At least you will have an informed opinion you can debate the topic.

I don't want there to be extreme groups on either side, but it seems very apparent that there are regardless of my own personal feelings.  Again, you call it an article, it is an opinion piece by an academic professor studying one side of the situation.  As he says, the Alt-right shares a dislike of European and American liberalism, but he fails to mention that the extreme left groups also share a similar hate for European and American conservatism.  Both sides exist despite your or my feelings that they don't.  The big difference is how the mainstream political sides treat those sides, and it appears that the mainstream Right is unanimous in its condemnation of alt-right groups and extreme left groups, but the mainstream left seems to be living in a world where the extreme left groups are a myth.  That might be news to Antifa, Occupy, and BLM.  Just because the SPLC doesn't identify these groups as extreme hate groups does not mean that they are not such groups.

Maybe the "mainstream' right needs it's own SPLC because of this new threat from the Left.  I don't see it. BLM and occupy used their voices but are not violent. Antifa is being influenced by anarchist s but what group are they threat to ? Other knuckleheads that want to much it up?
