Finally done with my interview and approved for naturalization!

Applied 9/13/2019, Brooklyn field office, based on 5 year rule

Interview first scheduled for April 2020, but cancelled due to Covid.

Rescheduled in December for Jan 20, 2021 - cancelled again due to safety concerns related to the presidential inauguration.

Rescheduled for Feb 17.

The interview itself was straightforward and the officer was really nice. We started with the civics questions (What are the two parts of the US Congress? Name one war the US fought in the 1900s? Name one thing Lincoln did? How old do citizens need to be to vote for president? Why does the flag have 13 stripes?). Then we did reading (Who lives in the White House?) and writing (The President lives in the White House). And finally we reviewed my application. I initially applied for my GC through marriage but got divorced since, but since I applied for naturalization based on the 5 year rule the officer only asked to confirm my ex-spouses name and didn't ask any more questions about that relationship. We then went through the yes/no questions from the application, and the officer told me he's approving my case.

At the end of the interview, the officer asked if I'm available on 2/25 to do the oath ceremony and sent me down to a different floor to get the oath noticed printed - it was definitely a pleasant surprise to get the oath scheduled right away and for so soon!

Thanks to everyone on this forum who share their stories - I'm excited to become a citizen and for this immigration journey to be over soon! :)

Sharing my info, dates and experience for others as I have found things quite helpful here.

New York Manhattan field office

5-year GC from employment

Filed N400: October 2019

Biometrics: November 15, 2019

Interview notice #1: December 1, 2020

Interview date #1: January 11, 2021

Interview notice #2: January 12, 2021

Interview date #2: February 16, 2021

Approved after the interview, currently awaiting Oath notice

I had 2 interview dates because I traveled outside of the country within the 14 days prior to the interview. I actually received a call from an agent beginning of January telling me that my interview is canceled. I explained about the NY state test-out regulation, but they said it doesn't apply to them. Since I didn't get any updates on the website, I called again a few days prior to my interview date and the agent said the system still showed my interview as valid but told me if someone said it's canceled then it's likely canceled.

With conflicting information, I wasn't so sure, so I decided to just go to the field office (in Manhattan) the day of my interview on January 11. I live 15min away so it wasn't a hassle for me. I arrived and got upstairs to check-in and explained the situation to the check-in agent. She cross-checked with another "cancellation sheet" and my name was on it. I saw at least 6-8 other names on that daily sheet and another lady in line in front of me was also told her appointment was canceled because of her travel. They told me to wait for a supervisor, waited 10min or so, and a supervisor came to explain to me what I already knew and told me to go home and wait for a new notice. The next day the system updated with a new interview time.

Went again the 2nd time to my interview this week and checked-in, but got flagged for something. They checked with a supervisor, not sure what it was for, but they checked me in after. Waited for around 30min before seeing an officer for my interview. Interview went smoothly, less than 30min and got approved. The officer gave me a print out of my approval and told me that the oath notice will arrive in 30 days or so. The system online updated the same day but no docs on the oath notice.

Lastly, the interview was straightforward, I was asked the 6 questions, read/write test, and the officer was a nice fellow and chatty, explained to me the merits of getting citizenship and how it's good for my career. Then went on to confirm my info and the questions on the application.

Civics questions:

1) What is the ocean on the east coast of the United States? (Atlantic ocean)

2) If the president and the vice president can no longer serve, who becomes president? (Speaker of the house)

3) Who is the speaker of the house? (Nancy Pelosi)

4) What is the highest court in the country? (Supreme court)

5) Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? (Thomas Jefferson)

6) Name one of the longest rivers in the United States? (Mississippi river)

Reading: What day is Columbus day?

Writing: Columbus day is in October

Hope this helps

How can I overcome this disrupted Continuous Residency?

Why would it be a problem to be outside of country for 6 months and 1 week?

AOS:

01-05-2017 - NOA1 received

05-03-2017 - Verbally approved in interview

05-26-2017 - Card was mailed

Thanks for all the detail!

Do you know how did they find out that you travelled outside of the country within the 14 days prior to the interview? I didn't know there is a rule against that.

I am currently outside of the country (mostly because of COVID), and waiting to receive my interview notice and I was planning to go back for my interview about 10 days earlier, would that be a problem?

Also, I got stressed that maybe they wouldn't even schedule my interview, IF they check records when they're doing it.

I found your answer here:

https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-12-part-d-chapter-3

so, you need to either show that you were still employed in these 6 months, or had a lease or owned a house, or that your family were still in US.

The interview letter specifically states that you have to reschedule your interview if you have been outside the country 14 days prior to the interview. I pretty much ignored it because I was hoping the NY state test-out protocol would apply (which they didn't accept).

USCIS has a record of when you enter the country, so if you entered the country less than 14 days prior to your interview, I assume their system will flag you and cancel your appointment.

It's normally from a few hours up to about 3 weeks. Did they say why they couldn't make a decision?

I'm currently over a year of waiting though, so I hope you're case isn't like mine!

The IO said everything was fine, they just needed to review it further and he'd hear from them by the end of this week, but i don't know how reliable this verbal promise is..

Good luck with your case!

Everything will be fine , as long as they said you pass the interview you should not worry. Can you please tell us little bit about  your husband interview experience? How it went? Do the io ask some documents at the interviews? Questions it ask?

thank you
