It takes up to 8 weeks to get SSN after K1 visa arrival?

Hi there,

 

I went to my local Social Security office today and the officer told me it can take up to 8 weeks for me to get it. He said it has to go through immigration, so they have to look at it first (I think it's an identification thing) It normally only takes 2 weeks right? He crossed the 2 weeks out on my paper and wrote 8. This is exactly 1 week after my PoE. I brought all the required documents with me, so I don't know what the problem is. Could I not be registered in the system yet?

They try to verify through the SAVE system. There are 3 levels of verification

1. Electronic -which is instant

2. Electronic but with scanning documents to SAVE.

3. Paper snail mail.

 

If one level fails it is escalated to the next one. The first one is where it takes about 2 weeks -since that is just the processing time for the card itself.

 

It can take even longer than 8 weeks. Took me 10 weeks and level 3.

 

The reason why they might not be able to verify you can depend on many things - for me it was that my name was too long to fit in the SAVE database, and each piece of info has to match EXACTLY.

SAVE is a system for varifying immigration status (USCIS database - you are in it pretty much instantly with the new electronic i94's, unless someone screws up)

@Suss&Camm thanks for explaining that. So what you are saying is that all of the 3 verification steps needs to match so that they can validate the persons identity? I requested my SSN beginning of August and ladie said it would take two weeks, I didnt receive and walked in to the SSA. She then said, "wierd I see your number and will print it out for your." She also requested the card again and again said it should take two weeks. I'm just a bit confuse by what the SAVE really is/means.

No, I said "If one level fails it is escalated to the next one". If you're verified at one level you're verified. For your case it just sounds like the card either got lost in the mail or failed to be delivered since you have been given a number. As said the 2 weeks is to get a card processed and delivered when there is no verification problem.

SAVE is the name of a database that the uscis provides to state government agencies for verifying ppl's immigration status.

Social security office and DMV both use it for example.

Interesting.....just tried Alien number/passport and i-94 and all i get is "No cases found that match the search criteria."

The online feature only tracks open case requests from agencies. If there is no open case request you will find nothing. It is not the database itself. It's just a case tracking tool.

No - it has nothing to do with your uscis petitions.... 

As I said it tracks cases that AGENCIES open when they try to verify your immigration status.

It take about 2 weeks for my wife to get i-94 number to show up in database(SSN office require i-94 number). After that, she went to SSN office to apply for SSN and it take about 2 weeks for her to get SSN card by mail. So it take about 4 weeks total.

Thanks for your feedback @bbf3562 however I did have all of that. I came on a K1 Visa, my POE was Chicago, printed i-94 before going to the SSA, then took everything they required and still no SSN in mail. That is frustrating cause I dont really know where to go, if I go back to the SSA they will say I should wait a little longer (its being 6 weeks already). If I go to SAVE I see the message below.

 

Do you have the Maryland number? how do I contact them?
