It can take up to 8 weeks to get SSN after K1 visa arrival?

Hi there,

 

I went to my local Social Security office today and the officer told me it can take up to 8 weeks for me to get it. He said it has to go through immigration, so they have to look at it first (I think it's an identification thing) It normally only takes 2 weeks right? He crossed the 2 weeks out on my paper and wrote 8. This is exactly 1 week after my PoE. I brought all the required documents with me, so I don't know what the problem is. Could I not be registered in the system yet?

Did you take a copy of your I-94?

 

My husband came on a K1.  We applied for his SS# within a couple weeks of POE.  He got his card in about 10 days.  Maybe your local office is backed up or slow?  Maybe he didn't know what he was talking about.  I would've asked why he crossed out the 2 weeks and why would it take so long (8 weeks).

He said because it goes through immigration so it will take longer. I took a copy of my I-94 with me

Hmmmm...ours didn't take long at all.  Maybe you will be pleasantly surprised and receive it sooner.

What did they say to you and what did you bring? I think the officer could not verify me somehow, even though I brought everything I needed
