The pro-smoking lobby got a small boost on Monday after a South Carolina woman

cheated death by nipping outside the house for a cigarette.

Brenda Comer, of Rock Hill, had just finished washing the dishes at around 11am

when she popped out for a gasper. At that moment, The Seattle Times dramatically

recalls, "an 80-foot-tall oak tree, felled by winds gusting up to 40mph, crashed

through the roof".

The tree fell directly onto the sink where Comer had been washing up. Her daughter

Amy, still inside the wrecked house, escaped unscathed. She recalled: "It sounded

like the worst cracking sound you could imagine."

Brenda later told hubby Franky: "Honey, I know you fuss at me for smoking, but

today it saved my life."

Bootnote

Years ago, I met an old timer who'd been an air warden in London during the Blitz.

One night in 1940, he tried to get into a shelter* during a raid but was turned away

because he was smoking. As he crossed the road, a bomb hit the building above,

which collapsed. More than 170 people in the shelter were killed. Accordingly,

whenever his doc suggested he really ought to cut out the cigs, he politely declined.

*Coronation Avenue, Stoke Newington. There's a eyewitness account of the tragedy

here.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Cigarettes

Pros: 1

Cons: 100,000,000

Pros: 2 actually. They also make you look cool and sexy. ;)

yeah... if you're 14. I don't find it sexy anymore, I used to when I was a teenager, it was sooo cool. Nowadays for me cool and sexy is to have a healthy look. People at the gym holding weight are way sexier than people holding a cigarette.

I wasn't being entirely serious. ;)

However, all these girls with six packs and biceps look terrible, IMHO. The opposite of sexy.

really? you really think that? I don't think it looks beautiful for women to build muscles like men do, you know? Make everything bigger, but to have everything defined I think it's beautiful.

It doesn't do it for me. Slim is one thing, the whole "Bowflex" (i.e. like the girls on those ads) look I just don't find attractive at all. Still its horses for courses.

On a related note, a tree recently fell on my house. If I was a smoker and was outside having a **, it probably would have killed me. ;)
