AR = Administrative Review.

DHS = Dept. of Homeland Security.

DOS = Dept. of State (the people who issue visas)

USCIS = United States Customs and Immigration Service (the people who approve petitions for visas; adjustment of status petitions; naturalization petitions; etc.)

USCIS and DOS are under the juris of DHS yet operate separately to create a system of 'checks and balances'.

doing the FBI namecheck isnt "doing the whole process from overseas again". For a visa, most places, police reports are sufficient (where as lucky us, get AR - security clearances) all this is DOS requirements. FBI namecheck stateside is for DHS. Different procedure. Many parts may parallel, but its not that same thing.

Hi

I am new here. so what means AR. DOS. DHS ????? They have all my police reports from back in belgium, nothing was on it and since I am here never had any contact with the law ! So, what are they looking for ?

DOS=Department of State

DHS=Department of Homeland Security

AR=Administrative Review

Like everyone has said, they're different areas of the government doing the check. This one is an FBI name check, and it involves checking, according to what I've read, every permutation of your name, and if a hit comes up, then they have to manually research it.

DHS isn't going to accept a DOS check, it's not as in depth, etc.

What is a permutation ????????????????????

A permutation is a variation of the name.

Given names and surnames can be reversed or deleted; nicknames are used, etc. Also phonetic interpretations of the name is searched, creating different surnames.

Thank you ........................ i learn a lot here from you all !

But this whole process doesn't makes sense !

And for so far I know, Belgium works good with the US, so when they need my information, Belgium will give it immediatly.

Don't forget that the FBI Name check goes out internationally, and all "hits" must be followed up.

We got this response back from Congressman Issa's office from the FBI:

I am responding to your facsimile inquiry dated January 18, 2007, concerning

the name check status of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for immigration purposes.

A review of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) Name Check Program

database concerning this individual revealed that a request was received

from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on

September 8, 2006, and is currently in process.

The FBI is sensitive to the impact of the delays in processing name check

requests. At the same time, the consequence of the FBI's mission on

homeland security requires that our name check process be primarily focused

on an accurate and thorough result. While an exact date for completion of

this review cannot be given, please be assured that the results will be made

available to the immigration authorities as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Section Chief

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Belgian San - in your thread I see you questioning why your interview would be waived if your name clearance is incomplete.

Interviews are primarily conducted to determine any fraud - a chance for the adjudicating officer to gather information about the validity of the basis for a petitioners request to remain in America.

Name clearance searches the background of the petitioner.

These are two separate matters. USCIS can choose to waive the interview if they feel the 'paperwork' supports the petition. They cannot determine the petitioners background, however, from the paperwork.

Amber&Neil,

The more common the name the higher the odds that someone having that name is on one or more 'bad guys' list. Then begins the process, usually manual, of figuring out if the adjustment applicant and the 'bad guy' are the same person or two different people. That's the time-consuming part.

Does a namecheck take longer if you have a name that is quite common or does it even matter?
