Received the interview letter / cannot go on the date offered / What should I do?

Hello,

 

I received the interview letter on 8/22/2017. The date of the interview is 8/22. I just realized that I will not be able to go on that specific date as it is a religious holiday. What should I do? Is there a number I can call to let them know? Or maybe I can send them an email? Let me know.

There are instructions on the letter as to what you need to do should you have to reschedule your interview....follow those instructions.

Sorry the date of the interview has been scheduled for 9/22/2017 and not 8/22. Sorry for the confusion

Per the response above, the notice will have instructions on what to do in order to reschedule the appointment.

Well...the interview is critical in that you will have to have one eventually to become a citizen...but re-scheduling it isn't a horrible thing if you have no  choice.  Keep in mind that sometimes it can delay you receiving another appointment for a few months, and sometimes it can also  result in USCIS not receiving your notice of re-scheduling at all and then issuing out a "no-show"...you should be  fine  so  long  as you follow the instructions on how to reschedule, and USCIS receives your notice.

I understand. Do you think I should use Fedex to send the letter to make sure they get it? Or maybe use USPS with a tracking?

 

Also is a religious holiday a well accepted and respected reason to ask for a rescheduled date?

Up to you, just make sure to get a tracking number either way.

Tracking number is a must but do you think I should also ask for a signed delivery receipt?

Tracking number is more than adequate proof that the letter was delivered should that ever come into question later on.

 

The signed delivery receipt is optional, but realistically it's no more "extra" proof than you would already have on the tracking number alone, in my opinion.

Not intended to ask you to prioritize any events in order to against anything; but I personally suggest not to reschedule an interview because of the following reasons:

(1) You have been waiting for a long time.

(2) You might not know when USCIS will schedule your interview again. (Few months? Or year?)

(3) The reschedule letter might be lost due to unforeseen circumstances.

The interview usually takes from 30 mins to 2 hours. What time is your interview ?

I asked to reschedule my Aos interview (not US citizenship interview but the procedure should be similar) via phone two days ago. That way I felt like the mail can't get lost and it get's faster processed as I skip the delivery time and I have a confirmation number that was given to me over the phone, but I guess that's just preference on how to reschedule it. It says online on my case status that they received my request to have it rescheduled but that it hasn't been assigned to an officer yet... so hoping I'll get an answer on time.
