just came back from abroad with only a few days left, before my GC expires.  I was asked if I have a new card I said I have an extention  letter.

They had a blank look on their faces. Honestly I wound't risk it.  They see and look at the card, the letter looks like a piece of paper that anyone could've printed. I felt very uncomfortable. Luckily, I had a Nexus pass, which helped.

It's kind of ridiculous that it takes such a long time to process legal immigrants, who have paid their dues, done the security clearance and paying income tax.

It seems that I worry about following the law and doing the right thing to the best of my ability< when others don't even bother or care and have a free pass for all of it.

Tis the life of an immigrant and anyone sponsoring them. I don't say that to be harsh or anything. It sucks. But what can we do? Only follow the path that DHS and USCIS have laid out in front of us. The only thing is having the patience to make it through. Eventually, pretty much everyone makes it through and in the end, most people will forget this website exists, sadly. Without this place, we'd be lost. So, when I'm (my wife) is done, I plan to stick around to help people out.

That's the same thing I'm doing too it's better to be patience without traveling if it's not pressing/important till I get through my N400.

But has there been cases of anyone who got his/her citizen without having the 10 years GC approved first?

No. Because USCIS will adjudicate your 10-yr GC before processing the N-400. I've heard that there were cases where you'd have both interviews the same day. Your 10-yr GC interview immediately followed by your N-400 processing. When USCIS sees a N-400 and are ready to process it, they have to check if you have a 10-yr GC 1st. Then they must adjudicate it so that you're eligible to be a US citizen.

Thank you M&B.

There are new things that I learn each day. Guess we're stuck till all the process are over. Honeymoon delayed till further notice!

We came back with extension letter. We had no problems at all. Customer service person at check in desk had to ask couple questions to her co worker and looks like he told her we are ok to go.

at the us customs we had no problems at all, immigration officer just took a letter and looked at the names be sure they match. It’s all. Don’t be scary and travel if you need to. You got this extension letter for a reason. Just don’t loose it. 😄

I just wanted to share my experience,  i travelled to India and returned 2 days before my GC expired. I didnt want to risk though I carried my extension letter so I returned back before my gc expiration date. Even though I had a valid green card on my return at paris airport they asked me for my extension letter. They also asked me questions like when did I pack my bags and did I pack by myself! Might be a routine but that was not required in my opinion. At US port of entry it was all smooth no questions asked.

Yes, right. When my husband travelled to DR he had 2.5 months before his green card expiration date, in the US they asked him about the extension letter too before he left, at the checkout counter.

It still safe to travel as soon as you have this letter.

I traveled to Nicaragua in October and came back after 8 days and my green card was expiring on December 4 and I totally forgot the letter of extension but when I pass to the CBP he only asked for my green card ad nothing else. This was in FortLauderdale airport but just to be safe I would take the letter of extension because you never know what they will ask.
