My spouse is Canadian and his Canadian Passport expires in May 2018. We are sending our immigration forms out in a few weeks. That won't affect anything will it? He is in the US and we are filing from here.

His Canadian passport being expired doesn't affect your immigration application process in any way.

He should get it renewed though from within the US closer to the expiration date, in case he has to travel to Canada for an emergency, or otherwise---just to keep it up-to-date.

Sometimes it's easier to renew in Canada. You can physically go down to the office, submit your application, and have it mailed out to you or you picked up within a couple weeks. I renewed mine a couple months ago and had it in hand within 12 days. If you mail in the application while in the USA, you're waiting at least that long just for the mail to deliver... and besides the wait, your old passport and application could get lost along the way.

It's kind of one of those "why not, if you can?" rhetorical questions, I suppose.

As a side note for those reading, because I had the same confusion myself, you might read somewhere that you need the passport to be valid for 6 months after POE. This is not the case for Canada. It is on the exception list for the "6 month club". The full list of countries is here: https://www.cbp.gov/document/bulletins/six-month-club-update.
