I've recently just got my passport back with my k-1 visa stamped in it I'm moving from the uk, I was wondering if anyone has more information on paperwork that needs to be filed once arriving in America and also what is needed to apply for a drivers licence and do your test and how long I need to wait before I can apply for my license?

Thanks

Congratulations on your approval of your K1 :):):)

Once you cross the boarder and have married, you will then begin to prepare for your "adjustment of status"

In regards to drivers license... I believe different states have different procedures.  I couldn't get my drivers license until I had my green card (California)

Best of luck :)

You don't send the SSA anything you actually show up to get a social security card and bring with you the I-94 form You do not get a permission to work UNTIL you file for AOS and include the EAD form in that as well. The permission to work usually arrives within 3-4 months after filing.

Congrats :) ... All you gotta do is pack your bags and get here....get married soon and start your new life with your loved one!!!! :) .After entering into the country give about a week and then apply for your Social Security Number...it will take 2 weeks for you to receive it, and then for License, you will need to check with your local BMV/DMV, and its upto you if you want to open a bank account or be a co-owner with your spouse's bank account. After a month or so you can also apply for a secured credit card and start building your own credit history, again you can add your name to the existing credit card of your spouse. Any more questions? we allll are here to help you. Anyways, have a safe trip and all the best :)

OP-- just so you know, the second link given is not for you. You have a K1 visa and do not need an I-130 petition filed on your behalf.  You only adjust status, file for work authorization (EAD), and a travel authorization (AP).

You don't have to wait 2 weeks or be married to go to a Social Security office and apply for a SSN.

Your NH state rules for driving https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/driver-licensing/non-us-citizen/index.htm You will need your work authorization card (EAD) before you can get a driver license.

Look into filing a P85 with the UK's HMRC before leaving (or after). https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-leaving-the-uk-getting-your-tax-right-p85

You may get a refund.

1. After 2 weeks of your arrival, apply for your social security card in your maiden name.  See steps and reasoning here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

The information is outdated. With the electronic i94 system there is no longer any need to wait.

Congrats on your approval!  My husband got here on June 23rd and we are still navigating our way through this process as well but I will share what we have done so far.  :)

June 23rd - Arrival (JFK was POE and South Carolina was the final stop)

July 14th - Applied for Social Security number (needed passport with K1 visa and I-94 arrival record which we printed offline https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home) AND added him to my bank account (we did not need his SS number.. only 2 forms of ID which we used his passport and his UK license)

July 21st - Received SS card in the mail.

August 4th - Marriage

August 15th - Sent AOS packet

August 28th - Received the NOA1s for this AOS packet

And now we are waiting.  :)  We plan to get his license in the next week or so.  From what I have been told for South Carolina he needs 2 proofs of residency (letter from the bank and letters from USCIS), his NOA1 from AOS, his current license, and passport with visa.  We are told he can take his written and practical exam on the same day.  We hope this is true.  I will update once we are able to obtain his license.

Good luck to you!  If we run across any helpful information I will send it your way. :)

12/23/16 - I-129f packet received

1/5/17- NOA1 receipt date

1/10/17 - NOA1 Hardcopy received
