Yes some VJers had issues before. Merely due to the ignorance of HR personnel. Most recently someone reported issues with Walmart HR dept.

It happens. No different than the ignorance of DMV people or mortgage underwriters. Keep in mind, a valid driver's license + SSN card with no restrictions suffice I-9 requirements, employers cannot mandate which documents they would like to see for I-9. If you don't wanna deal with extension letter, show the DL + SSN card instead. If you go with the GC+Extension letter path and they give you a hard time, be ready to educate them on this issue.

I was employed by a new company for the first time since my green card expired a the beginning of the month. My green card was brought up in conversation, but they only ever asked me for my social security card and driver license.

Posted

The HR person had trouble understanding the situation with the extension letter.  They had to call  other people to verify   ( took 1-2 days)  and then they called and confirmed my start date. i was very anxious because i had already gave my previous job my resignation letter. Some companies HR are just clueless when it comes to immigration stuff.

That just means he can't use the card plus DL for the I-9, has to be something else from the list, probably the expired card + letter.

That's true. Although if it were me, I'd get that new, unrestricted SSN card soonest! So much easier! Maybe someone can point @Luckycuds in the direction of how to get a new SSN card?

Not true. LPRs also get unrestricted SS card. I think OP did not because their employment authorization came before their LPR status. People like me who came with a CR1 visa got unrestricted, so there must be a way to get that, given that they were approved as a conditional permanent resident.o

Ah! Here's a thread about it!

Wrong. You can get an unrestricted SS card even when you have the conditional green card.

I got my conditional green card on October 1st, 2015, I waited a few weeks, went to the SS office, and received my unrestricted SS card a few weeks later with no problems.

It is advised to switch to the unrestricted SS card as soon as possible because using it with a Drivers License (or State ID) makes applying for jobs also much easier.
