Hello everyone!

My fiancee and I just got our interview date and we're starting to think about all of the stuff we have to get done when we move back to the states. Just a bit of background -since I haven't posted in this forum before- I am the USC and Dave is an Australian citizen. We have both been living in London for over a year now and are having our interview here in London.

Anyway! We were wondering what the process was of him getting a drivers license in the states. I know that each state probably has their own rules about it, but I'm sure that the process will be roughly the same for each state so if anyone has examples from any state that would be greatly appreciated. I tried looking it up on the GA DMV site and they didn't have any information about it at all!

I know that with an Australian drivers license that he can drive in the US for a certain period of time, but since we plan on living in the US for at least 2 years, I thought it might be best to get his license as soon as possible. Do we have to wait for him to get his SSN before he can get the license? Do we have to wait for his greencard? Does he has to take the test over again like someone would at 16 or does he just show that he has an Australian license and they automatically give him one?

Again, we'll be living in Georgia, but information about any state would give me an idea of what to look out for!

Thanks so much!

Marina

There is no such thing as an 'American' license. Each state issues its own licenses and each state makes its own rules.

Here are Georgia's rules:

Thanks for the link. I looked on the DMV site yesterday and not the DDS site and that must have been why I couldn't find anything.... And you are right, there is no such thing as an American license, but since my questions wasn't specifically about GA drivers licenses I phrased it in that way.

Thanks again for the link!
