Hi everyone,

has anyone ever rescheduled their Greencard interview? What are your experiences?

I booked flights to go home to see my family because both my grandmothers are not doing that well (one is 93 years old so not surprising) and of course my AOS from a K1 interview got scheduled a day after I leave. I know I should've anticipated it but I was hoping since none of the people who filed in January with the field office San Diego had their appointments yet, that I wouldn't be getting one anytime soon either (especially cause I had an RFIE in April).

Please help!

I wouldn't reschedule the AOS interview but that's just me. I personally never rescheduled any interviews. Maybe someone else can share their expertise.

Would you be able to change the date of your flight? Or maybe you have travel insurance to get a refund for the plane ticket?

I hope your grandmothers are doing OK and have support from the rest of the family who is there.

Yes we rescheduled our AOS interview.  It was not difficult.  We were rescheduled for another appointment right away and within a few weeks of our original appointment.  When we got to the interview and I attempted to apologize for rescheduling the IO stopped me, waved his hand in the air, and said "no big deal".  We were approved the next day. Our field office was Cleveland.

Someone very recently posted a topic on this same issue.  You can use the search tool to find that thread and see the responses.

Thank you for your answer! I'll try to search on here again. When I did earlier I just saw cases with real family emergencies or pregnancies but nothing like mine that is not a real emergency.

I saw that I have to reschedule it in person at my field office, right?! I immediately went online but the earlierst appointment is for September 13th to talk to someone 🙄

I called USCIS where our appointment letter came from.  I got a confirmation number and within days they had mailed me out another appointment letter.  I bascially did it all over the phone with USCIS. The reason we had to reschedule was that my husband was still recovering from oral surgery.  I don't know if they considered that emergency enough, I just know it was not as difficult as I had always heard. I did take alot of evidence with me of why we had to reschedule.  Surgery appointment card, after care instructions, we took pictures of him, etc. just in case.  I don't want to tell you it won't effect you because every field office and case is different.  But I didn't have any of the trouble you hear of.

I just wonder if that's not going to be an issue since your status is not yet adjusted really. Will you be able to come back to the US without an issue?

I have my Advance of Parole as part of the EAD card so coming back shouldn't be an issue unless they would deny my AOS case for no reason while I am gone.

Yes I found a post of someone too that said that she was able to reschedule the same day of the interview (due to illness) over the phone so I just called USCIS and asked whether I can reschedule. The guy on the phone put my request in and gave me a service request number saying that I should get a notice and hear from USCIS very soon. He made it sound like I wouldn't have to show proof that it's an emergency and just said that he requested it to have it rescheduled. I'll see what kind of proof I can gather just in case they end up asking for it.

It's just that it's not an immediate emergency so I don't know what documents to gather... I'll see what I can do because I don't think the excuse that rescheduling my flights would be expensive and I already took the time off at work is considered good enough reasons.

Emphasize the reason your need to take the visit home not so much the cost. It's a factor but the reason for the trip is the real reason for the reschedule request. Definitely take the evidence with you just in case. They didn't look at any of ours but it's good to have it with you.

Just wanted to post an update in case someone has the same issue that I had and is looking for an answer on VJ:

So six days after I made the service request over the phone, I saw online that they already completed it today and sent me the response via mail. Since I usually have to wait for USCIS mail a while (it took the interview letter 8 days) before it gets to me I called the USCIS hotline to have me transfer to a tier 2 officer to tell me the outcome of the service request (yes they can usually see the answer of the service request although they often pretend that they can't). He told me that USCIS honors my request to have it rescheduled and that they will let me know about a new date of the I-485 interview.

Obviously I am pleasantly surprised how fast and smooth this entire process was. On this past weekend I received pictures of my grandma's recent medical documents from my brother that describe her overall medical condition (almost completely blind, severe hip problems etc., it was a long list) and had started to prepare them in case I was asked to submit proof of a 'family emergency' (although they would've not completely justified a family emergency but I thought it would show that she has issues that recently appeared indicating that it's going downhill with her and that with a 93 year old you just never know when it could be the last time I can see her). They never asked for a reason or proof to submit though.

I still have my field office appointment here in San Diego in a week that I will still attend, just to speak to someone in person to make sure that my field office is aware that my husband and me won't be in town for the I-485 interview and that it was rescheduled. I guess I'm doing that more for my own peace of mind after reading the horror stories on VJ that the interviewing field office issued a 'no-show' because they didn't have a rescheduled interview on file. Plus I am hoping that there might be a tiny chance that the IO can tell me when I can approximately expect the new interview date.

Glad to hear this!  Yes collect evidence and go to the appointment, can't hurt. Always good to cover yourself just in case.

I truly hope your grandmother heals and you can spend some quality time with her. My grandmother lived to 97.

Blessings!

Hey! I'm just curious to know if you went to your infopass appointment and if your field office was already aware of that you won't be in town/ rescheduled your appointment for your I485. I rescheduled mine too and they completed it on 9/16 but I haven't heard back yet. I also wanted to get an appointment in my field office but the next available one would be on 10/3 which is a week after my I485 appointment. Thank you!!

Call USCIS and ask to talk to a tier 2 officer and they can tell you what the notice says that they have mailed you.

i missed my infopass appointment so I never ended up going. I don't understand how I missed it, never happened to me before that I messed up a date of an appointment. I realized it the day of the appointment but it was too late.

I kept on checking the website for a new appointment every single day and they never had one available ever. I randomly checked it an hour ago and got an appointment for in three days. So just keep on checking their website you might get lucky!!!

Since i didn't think I was gonna get a new appointment I talked to a tier 2 officer on the phone today and he reassured me that since I got a letter stating that my interview was cancelled that everything is okay. After multiple times asking him without giving me a direct answer I assume the USCIS tier 2 officer on the phone can't see more than what i see online (still says it's scheduled for next week). I might be able to tell you more once I've been to my appointment on Friday to talk to an officer at my field office.
