You will need to search your memory better....you said it was 36 years ago...so think back where you were living/what was going on during that time of your life to at least figure out the State where your arrest occurred.  Once you figure out the State, then you can probably narrow it down easily to the city you were living in at the time of the crime, and contact the courthouse in that jurisdiction for a court-certified letter stating the records have been destroyed/no records exist (which is most likely the case since it was 36 years ago).

As for the final outcome of your case---I'm sure, even 36 years ago, you would be able to recall if you ever spent time in jail, were fingerprinted/booked or did community service, paid a fine?  It's not an experience I would imagine anyone would forget happening...of course some people's memories are better than others---I was arrested for something 23 years ago, and even if I didn't understand everything happening (due to my younger age at the time) I remember every experience from arrest to fingerprinting to appearing in court to what the judge said to me.

my thoughts to you, to try to recall the events better---is relax a bit, take out a piece of paper, and write down all of the possible cities/States you were living in 36 years ago based on your lifestyle at the time, family life, were you a student at the time or where you were employed, etc. to try to narrow things down.

Once you figure out the State, then it should be easy to figure out the city unless you moved extremely frequently within the same State.  With the name of the city/town, you can then google courthouses within that jurisdiction to obtain their contact info.

Keep in mind that you will need to submit this information at every stage of your immigration process----AOS, ROC, Naturalization----so whatever document you get from the courthouse, make sure you order more than one certified copy.
