There is a difference between being elite and treating those that are perceived to be unequal as lesser individuals and being successful.  Not all successful people are elite and not all elites are successful.

What is your definition of "elite"? I'd argue a top-notch craftsman is an elite in his profession, regardless of how much, or little said craftsman makes.

An elite is anyone who looks down on someone they perceive to be unequal.  A top-notch craftsperson may be an expert and/or successful in their field, but when they start lording it over others then they become an elitist.

That's exactly why it was written that way, I suspect.  I agree with you 100%.

If I look at the article in it's simplest form and assume the writer is trying to make a point of some sort, surely he would be trying to sway those from the alt-right and who at times are classed as uneducated. So why not write it in a manner that a normal educated everyday person could understand?

So to me he had no intention of trying to sway anyone's opinion, he was just pandering to his own class or readership.

Well your parents did an admirable job. Hate all this old class warfare nonsense  in the UK.  Not sure about in Ireland, but university used to be free in England in the 60s and 70s I think, so if you persevered it was still possible to enter. Don't get hung-up on the misuse of the word "elite". You, too, if you set your mind to it can be an elite. It's something to aspire to in the future.

Seriously, the op, makes many relevant points.

Thank you.

College and universities were subsidised but still priced above the cost of what my family could afford, the price of books was horrendous. I am not hung on the word elite but do accept that there are those who are much more educated than me, I don't resent them for it nor am I jealous of it. Do I aspire to be an elite, not at my stage in life (early fifties), I am happy with my life.

My life long dream was to live in the US, honestly I gave up on it in my 30's, first marriage was going down the toilet rapidly. But the internet is a wonderful thing and I am heading for 10 years married next March to my American wife (second marriage) and who would have thought that at this stage of life I would get the chance to move to the US and have a shot at my life long dream.

The article caters for you the writers intended market, it was never meant to sway the likes of me to his way of thinking.

Education does not just come from university levels, or college degrees.  I work with many folks that have advanced degrees and may be experts in one specific field but are dumber than rocks when it comes to anything else.  Quite honestly I feel some of the most educated people are those that experienced life in many ways and not just from an ivory tower or ivy covered hall.  In my case I also started working at 14 to earn as much money as I could to pay for college as I always wanted to be an engineer.  I worked any job I could find at golf courses, churches, janitorial, whatever to get the money for school.  Do I think I am more educated that others, not a chance.

That's great news. Good luck.

i usually don't do personal anecdotes, but I remember many years ago when a much older friend of mine, after many drinks at a pub broke down and went on a ramble. He had got a scholarship to Oxford, but because his father was a coal miner, he was, at that time, too embarrassed to invite his family to his graduation. He later felt much ashamed.  He was also in love with a Thai girl, that worked in the local pizza hut, but due to his self-perceived societal pressures, was engaged to someone else in his publishing company.

i was like, WUT?

School of life for me, 14 years old served an apprenticeship in a ladies clothing factory. The normal thing back then was to lay you off when you qualified and hire someone for peanuts again. Washed pots for a couple of years in a hotel before going to live on Jersey in The Channel Islands. Completed another apprenticeship this time as a wood machinist, let a woman get under my skin and came back home to Ireland. Became a Domino's Pizza driver before working my way to store manager, quit to move up the country for a different job. Became a food sales rep on the road driving around the country and sold 2 million in specialty meats and cheeses per year.

Great job great commission, until some idiot mechanic fixing my vehicle missed what he was trying to hit while swinging a 2lb hammer and it flew out of his hand and hit me full on the chin/mouth. It's actually funny reading it now, but the seizures and muscle repair took years to correct but all is good now and rearing to find my new path/job in the US.

Still no interest in learning those big words.

Well that's your personal choice. No need to mock those who choose to use big words. Sorry to read about your personal injury.

Except, it pretty much IS true.  At least from the standpoint of the definition of elite:

elite or e·lites or élite or é·lites. 1. a. A group or class of persons considered to be superior to others because of their intelligence, social standing, or wealth: "Auguste Comte ... believed that in the age of science society should be ruled by an elite of scientists" (Lewis A. Coser).

Don't feel bad.  I read it at least three times, and still wasn't sure if the writer is in love with the alt-right or the alt-left.
