No. It's only unethical if the doctor releases confidential information outside his office. This will make him/her loose his job, and license. Your doctor will not release, and cannot discriminate because his/her profession requires him/her to follow a set of ethical cannons. If he/she don't follow it, then he/she will loose their license.

Engineers are similar. We must follow a set of ethic cannon.

1. Uphold the safety of the population.

2. Always loyal to your employer.

etc...

etc...

It's lose...not loose and it's canons...not cannons. Doesn't not don't. Might want to revisit Spelling and grammar 101.

To the OP, when my husband went for his first visit to an American doctor he was not asked if he was a US Citizen or not. Maybe that was because he has insurance through me. Whether or not it's ethical I have no idea.

I think we need an eligible and a real psychologist to answer the OP's question. Or if possible to explain us what questions are allowed to be ask and which are not. I'm just curious. Just in case I might need one later

I should clarify....this was a medical doctor he went to, not a psychologist or therapist. Still, he was not asked about his status.

I'm taking Pyschology 202 right now, and when it comes to seeking a psychologist it can matter where one comes from, as different cultures view things differently, so one would want a psychologist that understands your culture. So if he was asking with that in mind, I think it is a good question.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I suspect it would depend on how it was asked, and whether the psychologist was curious about the accent or trying to determine if the depression sources from culture shock and homesickness.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1st, a therapist is supposed to know as much info as possible about their patients in order to help them, right? 2nd, the patient is not obligated to answer anything they don't want to answer (unless it's for insurance purposes), right?

I was going to reply to the OP but as the resident teacher is marking for spelling errors, I had better not...

a patient/client has the option of not answering any question they do not wish to discuss, of course, the therapist has the option of not seeing them if they feel like the therapy is not productive..........

Hi everybody :) . Is it ethical for a doctor, a psychologyst(therapist) to ask you wether or not you are a citizen of USA, durring one of the first visits? The issue my friend went to councelling was related to depression. Can a psycologyst ask that, he was wondering? If yes, i wonder why? My friend feels like he is now different, almost judged, in the doctor's eyes because he is not a citizen  . I wonder why was that question put since someones status should not matter in councelling, should it?

Is this something normal, common? Should i tell my friend that is not a big deal and to go back?

thanks (F)(L)

maybe, he was trying to get a definition of the problem..or, he was an #######

#######??????????????? That is so uncalled for.

To the OP, it's your friend's personal decision. If he felt it was inappropriate and feels uncomfortable, he should find another doctor. If not, no problem!

I am not a licened psychologist, but I do have a BA in psychology. I have worked for a long time in social services and assisted in milieu therapy with kids guided by some wonderful therapists. All that to say is that I have a good deal of exposure but am no expert.

A therapist is not a job interview. there are things that a potential employer is not allowed to ask in order to eliminate the opportunity of certain types of discrimination. The less they know about a person, the less they can take issue with. However, the relationship with a therapist is much different. The more they know about a person is beneficial in the overall experience of the client.

There is a clear code of ethics that therapist must follow. You can find a list here:

http://www.aamft.org/resources/LRMPlan/Eth...icscode2001.asp

Basically the therapist may not discriminate, may not use their clinical upperhand for things like personal/financial gain, sexual conquest, or any other benefit not explicitly intended in the therapy aggreement. And they may not disclose client information unless there is fear of imminent danger to themselves or others, or claims of surrent or prior child abuse.

They can ask questions and as stated before, the client does not need to answer. If after answering the client feels as though there is a decline in quality of therapy, the client can either change therapists, or report discrimination to the state licensing board. This of course should only happen if there is a solid reason to challenge this persons proffessional qualifications.

I agree, the information that the client is new to this country is very important to issues of depression, but someone unfamiliar with immigration issues may not understand the difference of asking "are you a USC" from "are you originally from another country"

All in all, none of us were there, so the client will have to decide for himself if he feels comfortable enough to go back. Therapists have clients seek other services all the time. They are used to clients shopping around a bit for 'a good fit'.

Good Luck

Sue
