Far-right smear campaign against Antifa exposed by Bellingcat

Far-right activists are using fake Twitter accounts and images of battered women to smear anti-fascist groups in the US, an online investigation has revealed.

The online campaign is using fake Antifa (an umbrella term for anti-fascist protestors) Twitter accounts to claim anti-fascists promote physically abusing women who support US President Donald Trump or white supremacy.

Researcher Eliot Higgins of website Bellingcat found evidence that the campaign is being orchestrated on internet messageboard 4Chan by far-right sympathisers.

One image shows the slogan "53% of white women voted for Trump, 53% of white women should look like this", above a photograph of a woman with a bruised and cut face and an anti-fascist symbol.

The woman pictured is actually British actress Anna Friel and the photograph was taken for a Women's Aid anti-domestic violence campaign in 2007.

The images first started circulating on social media late on 23 August with hashtags #PunchNazis, #MakeRacistsAfraidAgain and #BashTheFash.

Accounts appearing to belong to anti-fascist groups tweeted the memes, calling on activists to physically attack women who voted for Trump.

They are attacking Paul Ryan atm. Funny to watch! Everyday they attack someone new, are ignored by the person being slandered, and move on to another public figure. A really sad bunch.

alex jones and paul joseph watson are all over it, just like they were all over retweeting fake antifa accounts.

i've followed alex jones for a long time, and if there's one group of people he loves and certainly believes in wholeheartedly..it's those of the jewish faith. kushner must be one of his idols.

  I wish I could say I didn't see that coming, but the far right have long followed this pattern. Their modus operandi has always been about scapegoats and targetting. They have been following the Nazi playbook closely from the start.

    Historically, I think that's part of it too. The Nazi's in Germany went from winning 3% of the support in 1924, to 33% support and control of the government in 1932. They fooled a lot of people along the way, and a lot of the people who opposed them ended up in jail or dead. 

 

    There are always warning signs. People choose not to heed them. Most people in Germany knew what Hitler and the Nazi's were about.  At first, there were a relatively small number of fervent supporters and an equally small number of outspoken resisters. Most people ignored him. Most politicians watched. Hoped he'd fail. Hoped he'd go away. Gave in to him. Hoped he would settle down and behave once he got what he wanted. The rest, as they say, is history.

 

    This narrative today, that Neo Nazi's are attaching themselves to one of the most reviled groups in history just to meet like minded people for ice cream socials and such is an incredibly dangerous approach to take. They won't go away, not by choice anyway. The ideology and symbol have a clear meaning, and the goal is clear too.
