OK, quick question about social secuirity numbers. When we completed the DS-230 there was a section about assigning a SSN. We said yes. So what is the process from here? STL did you do this as well? Or anyone else? Just wondering what I should initiate in that regard.

Thanks!

So far, so good. Linh is enduring the lousy weather in New England so far. I am promising her that it isn't always so cold and dreary.

Welcome to America, Linh!

Step-by-Step Guide to getting a Social Security Number (SSN)

"On the visa application Form DS-230 (expires 7/31/2007), you saw the following offer:

"Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent To Disclosure" in order to receive an SSN and/or card."

Please note that this program is ONLY for Immigrant Visa holders (CR-1, etc). If you checked this box, a Social Security number will NOT be generated for you if you are a K-visa holder. As a K-visa holder, use the following guide to get your first, or replacement, Social Security number/card. If you have ever had a Social Security number, that is your number for life; you will need to visit your SSA office to get new card with the same number."

Hi Anh map!

Glad to hear things are going well for you and Linh.

As I understand it, checking that SSN box on the DS-230 does nothing for a K1 applicant. We didn't check that box, but I've read of instances on VJ previously where others have checked it but still had to physically go in and apply.

Here is a bit of advice. I'm not sure how the SSA office in your area will operate, but if you request the SSN after getting married, there is a chance you could run into trouble -- WE DID!

We elected to wait to file for the SSN until after getting married, with the thought that we would be able to get the SSN card in her new married name. However, upon applying at the SSA office in STL, we were told that because we were married now, my wife was no longer in K1 status and therefore she could not be given a SSN. We came home that morning printed out the law, talked to other VJ members, etc. and elected to go back to another SSA office in STL and applied again (in her maiden name) this time with no mention of being married. She was approved to get a SSN in her maiden name.

After recently receiving her green card, she went to the local SSA office here in NW Arkansas to have her name changed and they mailed her a new SSN card in the mail.

I've heard of many on VJ that applied after getting married and had ZERO trouble, and then I've read of more than a few that had similar experiences to ours.

Just some FYI for you...

Hi anh Map,

I also checked that box on the K1 application but it somehow means nothing.

When I got here, I got married after 4 weeks and after that I took my marriage certificate and Passport with I-94 to the SSA and applied for SSC without any problems. I received my SSC 2 weeks later.

You can apply for the SSC before getting married as well but then you need to go back to change the name. So if you do not wait too long before getting married, I would just recommend you to do it that way.

Good luck and welcome to the States Linh!

Hi Anh Map !

We got married 5 days after our arrival. We then applied for SSN. We have that already with her married name ( her choice ) as well as her ID issued by the washington state Dept Motor Vehicles. We had no problem at the SSN office. But as you have seen others have. Next week I will file for AOS and on the forms will indicate maiden name in parenthesis or explicitly state as much. How that will work I just dont know, but so far no problems.

Thuy is adjusting to the NW gray wet weather .... by wearing my long johns :) Very cute

This is exactly what we did here in CA. We encountered no problems or grief. She even received a W-2 for taxes this year. California is just better than every other state.

Dear friends,

What about the evidence in the AOS?? I really don't know what to show evidence, we just have 2 months together and I don't have a job now, I still on the way to get used to USA and need time to learn for driving as well.

I was wondering what would you show evidence now in the submitting of AOS??

And if we don't want to change the my name, do we need to come back to Social Security Office to inform them about our marriage to change another the Social Security Card, on my card they have the words

"VALID FOR WORK ONLY

WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"

It seems that I have to change to the normal Social Security Card eventhough we decided not to change the maiden name?? We applied for SSN before we got married.

You don't submit evidence with the AOS application- other than a new Affidavit of Support. You will bring all of your evidence to the interview- unless they send you a letter requesting it if you have one the lottery that gives you the green card without the interview.

No, you do not have to update your marital status with SSA if you are not changing the name on your account.

You're not eligible to remove the legend (above) until you have a Green Card. You "should" update your status with SSA after you get the Green Card, and again after (if) you become a US citizen.

Thanks for the replies. I actually read the form after posting and realized that checking that box did not apply. Then went traveling for work.

Linh's seen more of the US in 2 weeks than a lot of my friends in 20 years.
