Why are they so intent on beating up Journalists? This has happened at a couple different Anti Nazi protests, all done by Antifa.

Katya and I went to a museum today in Krasnoyarsk, and of course there were displays of Lenin and Stalin there.  I asked her how people in Russia feel about these two leaders and she told me that there is a big divide.  Many still love them and wish communism/socialism were still around and others see them for what they were power hungry tyrants that eliminated anyone they perceived to be in their way.  As usual in most cities in Russia there are still statues or streets named after these leaders, and in her opinion it is so people will not forget.

So not even in Russia they fanatically destroy monuments and statues of people of history they didn't like?

      The approach to Stalin and Lenin are not identical, I would say. After Stalin's death, reforms began immediately and they were not just political. There was a concerted effort to get rid of everything Stalin, his cult like personality, his reforms, his policies and to cover up his atrocities. Stalin's popularity today, I think, is mostly tied to the defeat of the Nazi's, and the overwhelming cultural and symbolic value this victory still has in Russia. Even among those who support him, there is a lot of controversy. There are not a ton of monuments left, and where they remain, it's not uncommon to see his statues defaced. 

 

   Lenin is still revered by many and I would still say he is still a very popular figure in many parts of Russia. I think younger Russians today may be more ambivalent than previous generations, but I still wouldn't expect Lenin statues to be coming down any time soon.

 

    Now if you ever visit any of the former SSR republics, don't expect to see a whole lot of statues of former Soviet leaders in most of them. Many of those countries are not interested in displaying the history of the USSR or celebratin it's leaders as hero's. I think that's a better comparison with Confederate statues.

I think the diagram should be circular rather than a straight line, there are of course differences between each end of the spectrum but for most practical purposes they are minor, their commonality is much more significant.

We are complex creatures with a variety of political, religious, ethinc, economic and value systems influcing our politics. Breaking it down to two dimensions only helps create the mess we have in this country today. Check out Mann and Ornstein's " it's even worse than it was" for the definitive study on the problem

  They do, just like anyone else. If they don't like the person being the key phrase.  Watch for the statue of St. Vladimir to come down as soon as the Putin era ends.
