No, it has not been denied. It is in the administrative processing for 5 weeks. My university wants me to come at the earliest as my research is getting delayed.

If it is in administrative processing you cannot schedule another interview. You just have to wait.

What were you told during the interview? Did they keep your passport? Is there a reason why you want a 2nd appointment?

I have been accepted as a postdoctoral fellow and hence have applied for a J1 visa. My visa interview was on 24th July 2017 at Hyderabad, India. The VO asked about my educational background and previous project ( I belong from pharmaceutical field) and asked for my passport and DS-2019. At the end of the interview she signed my DS-2019 and told me to show it at the immigration and returned my passport back, handing me over 221g white slip and told me that my case will have to undergo administrative processing which will take a few weeks, for which I will have to fill up a questionnaire. I filled up the questionnaire that received by an email and attached the required documents with it and submitted it the very next day (25th July 2017). And since then there have been no updates on my case. On the CEAC website the case created date and last update is being shown as 24th July 2017.

Was that the questionnaire about the social media accounts, etc? If so, it is DS 5535. There is one person on VJ that go the visa after filling in that passport, from Germany, and he/she said it took 40 days. People from middle eastern countries have been waiting months.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do but wait. You should talk to the advisor at the university and put together a plan so that you can do something from India, so that you basically hit the ground running when you get to the U.S.

The questionnaire wasn't about the social media accounts. It had questions related to my education and US college details.

Ok.

Some careers go into further AP, like if you robotics, nuclear engineering or related, etc. There are issues with national security.

Anyway, not much you can do but wait. You can try sending an e-mail asking them if there is something else they need from you, just to check that they received everything. But AP seems to be taking longer than before.
