I waited for a week after entering into the country and checked for online I-94 and printed it and took it along with my passport and a application form and received the SS card in about 8 or 9 working days. Here is where you get your online I-94. Enter your details and get your latest I-94

Not to derail the thread but why does he or she need a SS card so soon?? I plan to also apply for a SS card shortly after arrival into the US but want to understand the benefits.

Pros:

Driver license

Once married claim as spouse and dependents if any.  If not married at end of year then can claim as dependent and also children for tax deduction

No Affect:

Can't work yet with SS card number

I agree with this. I was in a rush to get mine so that I could open a bank account and transfer my savings over from the UK, and get a secured credit card, to start building a credit score with hopes of getting a mortgage with my wife in a few months.

OP - if your fiancé/spouse is changing their name when you marry (I realise the man doesn't usually do this, but some people do!) then I would advise waiting until that is done so that the SS card has his married name on it. Of course, if he's not changing anything, just go for it after a few days of being in the country as someone else has already advised.

01/18/17 - I-129F mailed to Lewisville, TX

01/25/17 - NOA1

05/05/17 - NOA2 (100 days from NOA1)

05/19/17 - NVC received and case number assigned

05/26/17 - Case left NVC, status 'In Transit'

05/30/17 - Medical

05/31/17 - Consulate received

07/13/17 - Interview, APPROVED!

07/21/17 - Visa in hand

07/22/17 - POE Newark, successful

08/02/17 - Married

08/23/17 - AOS filed (incl. EAD and AP)

08/31/17 - NOA1 date on AOS packet

09/21/17 - Biometrics appt

10/16/17 - Online tracker says 'Ready for Interview'

11/09/17 - EAD and AP approved

11/16/17 - EAD/AP combo card arrived

12/19/17 - Green card interview

12/22/17 - RFE received (medical had been lost)

01/23/18 - Green card in production

Transferring funds from India was my major concern and so I had to open a bank account. I mean i could have transferred funds from Western Union and used a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard that you get at walmart or other stores but why you wanna do it when you can actually open a bank account and since K1 applicants can't work until they get their EAD they can atleast get a secured credit card and start building their credit by atleast using the credit card for groceries, fuel and other bills.
