Hi VJ members.

Kindly advise which type of ticket I require for a K visa. One way or a  round trip to the U.S

Thanks.

Niaje na poa. I am the Spouse of a Kenyan. I applied for a K1 for him. He comes from Nairobi.

Your friends are not wrong and not right. It is grey area. Depends on the Airline. Take KLM or AF NOT Kenya Airways. KQ almost did not let him board because it was a K1. In their manual for the USA, KQ has K1 as a NON-Immigrant Visa (nothing about Immigrant Intent). Because I used a Frequent Flyer ticket, I got online and got him the return trip and got KLM to attach the return ticket.

THEN in Amsterdam, Security there questioned him why he had a return ticket since he had  K1. They knew the rules there. He explained and Security was okay with it.

Get a return ticket IF you are using KQ if you are taking the 8:00am Departure as the US Embassy is not open for calls at that hour. If you are using KLM at 11:30pm you are fine.

...complicated? Isn't immigration this?????

Ok... So you left the country on the return ticket before AP or issued a waiver, and somehow got back in without them knowing it? Not saying it couldn't be an issue for a complete moron processing the AOS, but seriously?

I94 tracks all movements by foreign nationals to and from the US though. So point still stands. Flight manifests are generated by check ins not reservations, and are the last thing to enter the aircraft prior to departure. I think we are over thinking this :) corporations often purchase numerous flights to and from the US for their execs and then they take the earliest one they can make and cancel the others. There are also " throw away " legs in tickets.

Although it doesn't happen all the time it's more common than you think and there is plenty of evidence of this here on VJ.

I used a One Way ticket for my wife traveling from Cebu, Philippines to New Jersey, USA. We didn't have any problems and everyone was nice to us.

We used the Airline Cathay Pacific. I was going to buy a round trip since it was like $500 cheaper. But however, then I noticed

that the airline claims it will charge money for people who purchase a round trip to only use it for a one way

So my advice is to first check the airlines rules before purchasing either one.

Thanks.

But some people are telling me since the K visa is an NIV, some airline won't allow people with an NIV to use one way ticket.  I Don't know how far this is true.

But for me it's much cheaper to purchase one way ticket here in Nairobi.

Some people have been giving you wrong information. And if you think about it logically K1 visa holders are supposed to stay and marry. It doesn't make any sense that a round trip would be required.  What reason would the airline have for not allowing you to use a ticket your purchased fr them? They have no say in your immigration issues.  K1 are non immigrant visas with immigration intent.

Use the search tool. You will see many many previous topics already started on the subject.

No it's not grey at all. They are 100% wrong. And if an airline insists on a return ticket for a K visa holder then they're 100% wrong too.

The only visa type I can think of off the top of my head for which a return ticket is an absolute requirement is the VWP. A C-1/D might need one too, although I'm not overly familiar with those.

I arrived with a one way ticket on my K-1. Half the price compared to a roundtrip, and if I had chosen the roundtrip it would've cost me extra to get the ticket that you can actually cancel and get your money back. So yeah, I would've been craaaazy to get a rountrip ticket.

Wrong, it is NOT a gray area! You CAN without a doubt purchase a 1 way ticket, a K-1 is a non immigrant visa with immigrant INTENT.

Anyone telling the OP otherwise has no idea what they're talking about.

More like incompetence or just lack of knowledge about these more specialised visas. Whatever OP feels comfortable doing, he will be fine.
