Multnomah County sheriff removes 'Thin Blue Line' flag from courthouse break room

After white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia, displayed a black-and-white American flag with a blue line across its center, Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese announced a similar flag had been removed from a break room in the Multnomah County Courthouse.

For some, the symbol known as the "Thin Blue Line" flag is used to show support for law enforcement and honor officers killed in the line of duty. Others say it's gotten co-opted by the white nationalist movement and shows disrespect to people of color.  

The flag was in a courthouse breakroom for Sheriff's Office staff, said sheriff's spokesman Lt. Chad Gaidos. A Multnomah County commissioner raised concerns about the flag to Reese earlier this week, Reese said in a statement Wednesday.

"The community concerns raised led me to ask that the flag be removed while we consider whether or not it is appropriate to display any altered United States flag inside a county-owned facility," Reese said.

The flag has sometimes served as a flashpoint in what has become the nation's fraught terrain of racial politics.   

In March, a Florida woman was asked by her homeowners' association to take down her flag after complaints that it was anti-Black Lives Matter.

A high-ranking Metropolitan Police officer last week sent an email forbidding officers from wearing the emotive “thin blue line” badge. A former detective said some senior officers thought it “could cause offence to some within certain communities”.

The row follows the death last Monday of PC David Phillips, who died after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while on duty in Merseyside.

Many officers had wanted to wear the badge (a black-and-white Union Jack with a horizontal blue line) in support of the 34-year-old father of two, but police sources said senior officers had expressed concern that the badge could provoke ill feelings in some communities.

Yesterday Ken Marsh, chairman of the Met Police Federation constables’ branch, said the email was sent around the time of PC Phillips’s death.

  OH noes!  Then we find out Cheetos are the snack of choice.  

 

 

    

 

 

          

  I don't recommend Cheeto's as a food but, mainly because they really aren't a food. If I ate them, I wouldn't give them up just because of this either. It's not like Cheeto;s have a long history or connection with racism. If you don't want racists linked inappropriately, take them back!! 

 

  Now I don't blame you if you get a little nauseous the next time you eat some.
