Personally this type of event is so rare in the overall picture of gun violence I'm not sure its justified demanding that students be allowed to carry. You simply can't predict / manage every risk that you're likely to encounter and changing the way you live based on a vague external threat (like psychotic students, or indeed terrorists) seems rather to justify paranoia.

There have been a few cases of school massacres in the last few years. No, they don't happen on a regular basis, but they DO happen. In my opinion, one time is too many. I've been in education for 12 years and you just never know who's going to snap. Of course that goes for any profession too I'm sure, but you can see the focus of these senseless killings has been mainly educational facilities. I guess in the overall picture of gun violence yes...it might be rare. If students are not going to be allowed to carry guns (I'm still not sure about that one m'self) then there *should* be stricter measures of protection in place to somehow prevent this type thing from happening. Many years ago one of my 7th grade students brought a pistol to school. There are no detectors in this school...then or now. How did I find out about it? He was bragging about it to a friend who didn't believe he had one. To prove it, he pulled it out and showed him...in the hallway...in full view and held it in the shooting position (pointed at the kid). The kid ran to my room to find me...end of the line for that kid for the rest of the year. Fortunately the gun was NOT loaded. But if it had been..... *sigh*

Courthouses have metal detectors because there have been courtroom killings. Federal buildings have them because there have been federal building killings. Why not college campuses? Why not high school campuses?

I agree - there is (and has been) an event of this type every single year. Even before Columbine.

I agree with the point made earlier that the majority of gun violence at those younger age-groups is gang-related, and its that which needs to be addressed rather than the frankly unpredictable risk of someone "going nuts". So suggesting that people start carrying as a way of stopping the latter seems bizarre to me - as the sort of person who goes on a suicide rampage isn't really going to care where they get their gun from - legally or otherwise. What it will do, IMO is enable the few 'disturbed' people to carry out pyschotic fantasies.

They vary from country to country. Some European countries have pretty lax gun laws...the UK is not one of them.

How about we ban guns but fully legalise the carrying of hand-to-hand weapons - swords, knives, axes etc. Given that hand to hand fighting requires some level of physical fitness we could not only stop crime but lower obesity too!

Kill two birds with one stone eh?

and then we can storm the castle too!

Interesting note for the Rambo wussification crowd: So the shooting happened on Monday, and as I've argued, there's a fairly low probability that a person with a concealed carry permit and a gun would have happened to have engineering or French that early.

But all this week campuses have been *very* jumpy. People reporting other people for carrying umbrellas, people reporting other people for looking suspicious, periodic bomb threats. And now, the concealed carry people would be out in force; they'd be jumpy, too.

How many kids you think would get shot on Tuesday due to a trigger-happy hero-wannabe seeing guns where there weren't any?

Or circle the wagons....well, some of us, anyway.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
