Credits cards I can get while awaiting AOS with no SSN?

Was wondering what credit cards I can get while awaiting AOS?  (I have no SSN or ITIN)

 

My wife already has one I'm authorized on, but I want one where I am the primary card holder as I need to build credit faster.

 

I've looked at the Capital One secured credit card and that one requires a SSN or ITIN. I don't think there's much point applying for an ITIN as that takes many weeks and I should have my EAD within 2 months. 

 

I want to be in a good position to take out a mortgage in a year or so. What would you guys recommend?

Wait until you have your SSN and get the capital one secured. 

 

Amex let's you get one without social but it's really not recommended when you're just starting your credit. 

 

I started my credit by financing a car.

I believe if you have your EAD you can get a SS Number. However, it will be a restricted one with Authorization to Work only with DHS Permission or something to that effect. You can apply for a secured card that way. However, the better option to to develop a credit score is to add a card in your name on your spouses credit cards. That way his/her Credit rating then transfers to yours.

Well I won't have my EAD for another 2 months minimum.

 

Should I take out a secured card in the mean time?

Honestly credit builds very slowly so you won't lose much but waiting two more months. 

 

If you have a bank you could ask them if they have credit cards. They might not require a SSN right away. Just make sure to update them as soon as you have your SSN so your credit report gets tied to it.

 

There are some credit cards for international students as well which don't require a SSN but I don't know how well this applies to you. Check selfscore dot com for example. Good luck!
