I gotta say though, 10/10 for the effort.. is a lot more than many native Spanish speakers in California attempt.

Here is a himmicane report from a buddy who lives between Corpus Christi & San Antonio, written at 4:30a Saturday:

 

"It is 4:30 am here and the wind is blowing like crazy at around 80 mph since midnight.  The eye supposedly headed straight for Goliad.  The wind is forecasted to subside by 6 am.  I figure if the casa has held all right since midnight, it can withstand another hour of this.  Surprisingly, the power is still on.  I do have a small generator just in case.  Before the storm came, I tied down the metal carports to the vehicles inside with big ratchet straps.  I also placed old car batteries on top of the metal roofing laying ouside.  I did not board up the windows and so far, have been fine.  But yes, this is a very scary storm that is keeping me on pins and needles."

 

Speaking of which, wind again picking up outside here, with thunder.  Will go see the 6p TV news for more, now.

Mrs. T-B. is actually a certified translatrix/interpretress, so her English usually isn't too bad (with notable exceptions).

When she first arrived, her amigas in her English classes were jealous that she was married to a gringo and could practice at home.

Whenever I try to say anything in Spanish, the natives look alarmed and urgently point me toward the nearest bathroom.

Definitely an asset in a state like Texas. My first language was German, second English (also learned Spanish and France variant of French), proficiency used to be English->German->Spanish->French and at this point, when it comes to proficiency its now English->Spanish->German->French.. due to being in Canada with the Quebecois variant of French, and not being around Spanish anymore, I imagine it French will wind up being the new second in a few years. Knowing other languages is addicting for me, but especially when other people are around you.. I always found it fun to listen in on conversations when Spanish speakers assumed I had no idea what they were saying.

 

With regards to the hurricane, its weird that Alberta has been talking a lot about it (given the path shouldn't be anywhere in this area), from the sounds of it they were saying the hurricane has died down significantly. Of course, I'm skeptical of our grasp of weather as I am with our grasp of climate. I think probably one of the worst things to do is underestimate one.

1.  No way.  Nine inches more rain (minimum!) predicted just overnight.  Tornado warning 5 miles away from here right now.

Tyres, bonnet, boot, indicators, windscreen...:) and I'd replace 98% of stop signs with roundabouts or giveway (yield) signs

Not till Wednesday or even Thursday.  Thing is expected to stall, then loop around, then meander straight north between San Antonio & Houston.  East (dirty) side will continue to get hammered.  I don't doubt the prediction of >25" of cumulative rain.

 

As long as our roof stays on, windows remain unbroken, and there's a power innage...

Buggies (shopping carts), Eavestrough (raingutter), Washroom (bathroom), Tuque (beanie), ABM (ATM), h.o.m.o milk (whole milk -- thanks censor), Housecoat (robe), Pop (soda, though I know certain areas of the US use this term too, some others just call everything "Coke"), Chipper/Chip truck (catering truck/roach coach), KD aka Kraft Dinner (mac n cheese), and tons more oddities (aka milk bags out in Ontario and Quebec).
