Decided to head to Austin on Tuesday morning. We made the decision after I was called by my friend who was trapped in his house by water in the streets. I tried to reach him via 4 different routes but all were blocked by water or by the police who were turning people back. 

 

On the way back home, this Dodge truck passed me trying to go through but stalled in the flood water. It took me and 4 other guys to push this truck through knee-deep water to where the tailpipe was no longer in the water and the engine could be started. The grateful driver then drove through people's gardens to drier ground. 

 

Since this community is next to ours (Great Wood) and we're still waiting for the Brazo River to crest, we decided to leave for Austin

We didn't leave until we knew our buddy would be rescued by the emergency services. We head back to Sugar Land tomorrow. I hope everyone else is safe and thank you for the messages I've received. 

 

PS We have a friend who lives in Germany and she mentioned that the "Texan Way" has been wide spread on the news over there - no doubt. "Texans helping Texans" and how this is an example to the world. I agree 100% with the latter but don't forget that Houston is one of the most internationally diverse cities in the country and we've been helping each other irrespective of the nationality.

 

Everyone affected are constantly in our thoughts! Be safe...

And to that last paragraph, it shows people in Texas can fill the planet with the enormous hearts they have. Glad to see the true Texas spirit come out from all this.

My wife's an introvert so I sometimes need to push her out the door to make friends.

 

Recently, getting her out of the house enabled me to build a little beast of a desktop. (which I spent much of yesterday putting together)

Haven't heard much about Greatwood, but the Brazos is flooding everything in, out of, and not remotely close to its path.

Areas of Brazoria County that had escaped the initial stuff are now under water.

High-water rescues are STILL taking place.

This ain't nowhere near over.

What with the end of wall-to-wall news coverage, people might assume that Harvey is over.  However:

-- counties downstream from Houston are now, and newly, severely flooded

-- Beaumont has been without power AND water for 4 days now

This is equally as tragic as what has already happened.

Mrs. T-B. had evacuated a bunch of canned goods upstairs.

Rather than merely cramming them back into our unnavigable pantry, I decided to take inventory of the pantry's contents.

 

Ended up with 62 canned goods and 6 wrapped boxes of chocolates to donate to a nearby food bank, done this morning.

 

As a bonus, dinner for me yesterday came out of toucans of greatly expired stuff, and I'm still here to tell about it.

For "dessert," I ate onecan of something, for a total of threecans.

(After lifelong experimentation, I think that expiration dates on canned goods can be ignored quite liberally.)

 

The question arises:  If toucans get divorced, are they then called onecans?

Horrible.  A couple of the upstream reservoirs had to be released, which exacerbated the already-bad problem.

Possibly along that line (or publicizing my himmicane-addled brain):  I awoke on Saturday morn with a nearly complete Spanish haiku in my forebrain.  It is (ahem, harrumph), see man:

Just discovered that the 5-7-5 scheme in Spanish is 5-5-7 in the translation, just missed it man.

Mrs. T-B. helped with the word-order of the last line -- I never realized that meanings could change so much in Spanish if solo were the last word.
