The filthiest everyday surfaces that we could possibly touch are, in probable order:  umbrella handles, ladders, and suitcase handles.

Don't forget shopping cart handles.

True, but those at least one can wipe off, or push the carts while holding the bars with a napkin.

Many supermarkets provide those wet-wipes for just such a purpose.

Which brings to mind how many packs of same might be needed at the various Houston evacuation centers...

1.  Good for Auntie ML, si ma'am.

2.  She cleans up pretty well, most times.  The most-appreciated gift that I ever gave her was a selfie stick.

Earthquakes, I don't wanna experience.

During Himmicane Ike, lost power for 6 days.  NOT fun.  It was a real boon to have a power innage for all but 90 minutes this time.

tbh if I lived near any hurricane prone place, I'd keep an emergency fund set aside and when seeing a hurricane this size I just pack our stuff up and drive away for several days until the chaos subsides.

Earthquakes don't yet have any prediction factor, you don't know you're in any worthwhile one until a few seconds after it starts. I like the prediction factor of hurricanes.. I just hate the day-by-day weather of the areas that have them.

That being said, a friend of mine during the 1989 Loma Prieta was shopping in the Salinas Northridge Mall, he was walking between the huge glass walls to/from the mall that day, and I wouldn't be surprised with glass walls that size someone pissing themselves with how horrifically they swayed.

You can say the same thing about volcanos, and how many people live in close proximity to an active one somewhere around the world.

Unofficial Harvey rainfall totals, see man:

One area, northeast Houston = 52 inches

Several others = 48, 46, 44 inches

My 'burb's total, just on Monday = 17 inches

My 'burb's total = 36 inches

Normal total annual rainfall in Houston is something like 50 inches.

Now, Beaumont & Port Arthur are getting slammed, with around 17 inches so far just today.

If I was in the area (and not flooded in) I'd be out there assisting.

Well.. if groups like the Red Cross wants to accept volunteers this time.

I tried to volunteer for Katrina (while living in the Bay Area) but RC complained about my lack of CPR certs.

They need vols of all sorts.  In Houston, they're registering them at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Bless you, si man.  Surely even token amounts are appreciated.

I just called our 'burb's "hurricane info" line to see if something similar was set up for our city's First Responders.  The gal didn't know, but can find out tomorrow.

It's interesting to me that I always considered Houston's city government to be this inefficient, bloated, bumbling group of self-centered bureaucrats who were concerned with feathering their own nests.  Mayor Sylvester Turner -- who'd run for the office thrice before and lost -- has turned out to be quite a leader, both organizationally and inspirationally.  He said openly today on TV that he wasn't concerned with image, but rather with results.

Conversely, I'd viewed our 'burb as a big city with small-town responsiveness and effectiveness.  The late, inefficient, ineffective, insufficient responses to everything (city and county) need to cause some heads to roll.

Ultimately, your immediate community makes for the best support system. No government - county, city, state, or fed - is ever ready for the unprecedented. It's at times like these that We The People need to step up and get with it. From Katrina we go the Cajun Navy, many of whom are now in Texas. America is pretty darn great man.

An unexpected boon has arisen, consequent to moving furniture downstairs:

First, background, see man:

I play a game called "Wrappers" with the cat.

I throw wadded fast-food wrappers (Burger King Whopper, Arby's, Subway) for her to chase across the floor.

She gets quite energetic during this game, and I've even worked up a sweat.

Unfortunately, over time, many wrappers have gone under the furniture, causing abandonment of the game.

When cat wants to play, she carries a wrapper in her mouth and drops it by my chair.

She then occupies my lap and is overtly affectionate.

If I fail to respond promptly, she'll bring another wrapper.

"Daddy didn't want to play with the first wrapper, so maybe he'll play with this one," she perhaps reasons.

Anyway, we found probably 8 wrappers under the furniture during Harvey time.

This will enable much play and mitigate the under-furniture loss of any single wrapper.
