Anticipating Medical Exam Issues

Hi,

My fiancee just submitted our I-129F. Been lurking around these parts and saw some posts on possible delays relating to the medical exam. I come from the Philippines, and I'm not 100% certain if I'm tuberculosis-free (some relatives and friends of mine got their visa delayed because of the sputum test and whatnot). So I'm guessing this is my way of anticipating potential issues and heading off delays.

My question is, is it a good idea to have myself checked for TB, and if ever I have it, start treatment already? It takes 6 months to medicate it, I read, and that would line up easily with our application in case I have it. What do you think?

Thanks.

If you guys have just submitted, you now have 3-4 months before NOA2. So if you don't want to be caught off guard and be stuck with a potential sputum test, you can probably see a doctor now to get tested for your own peace of mind :)

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

i agree! there is no harm in getting tested now. in fact i think it is a good idea to be tested (and if ever, treated) anyway, regardless of whether you have a visa application or not.

Yes you could complete the culture test now, in anticipation ... it takes 60 days.  If it is positive you will still have to complete the culture test with SLEC if they deem it necessary.

Not sure if there would be a benefit to starting medication outside of St. Luke's system.

DOT (Direct Observation Therapy - meaning they must SEE you take the medication) medication is a 6 month process... St. Luke's is required to follow CDC requirements,

My gut reaction... anticipation is fine ... trying to side-step the process at SLEC - not so fine.   Just my thinking.

Thanks for you replies! I'm not trying to side step the SLEC process, to be sure. I'm just thinking of ways to make the whole visa process less stressful (meaning no delays as much as possible).

I'm going to schedule an appointment with my pulmonologist tomorrow to start the TB screening process. :) just needed to sound off on this very helpful forum.

St. Luke's will base their decision to have you complete the TB SPUTUM based upon your Xray.  The Xray machine at your doctor's (or near by clinic) will not be near as good as what SLEC is using ... I have heard this a few times with nurses that have come through and reported back.

Completing SPUTUM now will do no harm, and may give you a heads up for later...  peace of mind.

My wife was nervous, as well as I was too but not to the extent that she was but I wasn't facing what she could have been and she did xrays prior to SLEC. They were negative so it gave her piece of mind until she "passed" at SLEC which she and the kids did.

I'm in the school of thought that you wait till SLEC for any treatment schedule as they are pretty picky but going ahead and having a xray done can give you that piece of mind that you desire. Good luck.

I think this person is talking of doing the culture, which won't hurt, and they do have the time.

Xray would be a waste of time and money as most placed don't have the same quality of Xray machines as St. Luke's.

For those that don't know it, St. Luke's is a Mayo Clinic affiliated hospital ... you don't get to that level being a "so-so"  hospital.

Just an update. Consulted with my pulmonologist and he said it was a great idea to screen for TB way before the medical exam for the K1 visa. He sent me to St Luke's in Quezon City to get a PA, lateral and apicolordotic view xray. I think these are more thorough xray than the one they do in SLEC.

Results were good, I have unremarkable results, which is a great.

I also asked the radiologist if the use the same xray machine in SLEC. He said it's the same.

Thank you everyone.
