SSN required before we can marry?

Hey folks. 

 

We are due to marry in September and we just learned about the SSN and potential requirement for one before we can get married. Is it true that you CANNOT get married on the K1 visa unless both parties have a social security number? (Marrying in Michigan)

No, it's not required. Lots of people don't get their ssn until after they are married.

Getting marry does not require SSN..get marry to your fiance and apply for SSN

All what you need is your passport. If you plan to marry at a courthouse, contact them in advance to find out what the requirements are. When I got married they only asked me for a passport.

No US state requires you to have an SSN before you can obtain a marriage licence; if you do have one then you're obligated by federal law to provide it, however.

No. Not required at all in order to get married. 

 

However, it is easier to get one before marriage than after since they will require for your GC or EAD before you can get an SSN after getting married.

 

Also, you can use SSN in certain things such as adding your SO to your bank account. They required that from me when we opened a joint bank account in Bank of America. And joint bank accounts are evidences you can use once you file for AOS to prove that your marriage is bonafide.

 

I was also able to use my SSN to prove that I am a Floridian so I was able to avail the discount for Florida residents when we had our honeymoon in Disneyworld. Didn't know that SSN would be 'that' handy but I am glad I did file for it before marriage.
