So he was a King of a country that used slaves across the Carribbean to work on the sugar plantations. His country benefited from it, he just got others to do his dirty work for him whilst slavery was illegal in England.

Considering that slavery was outlawed in England 1807, but had been going on for almost 1,000 years before that, and considering that America had it's first settlers in 1607, about 200 years before the abolition of slavery in England, and considering that Western Europeans were the predominant slave traders of those times, and considering that only about 1.4% of the US population ever owned slaves...

Why is it that England gets a bi, but us white people of America today are the bad guys?  I mean, it's not like Americans went to Africa and bought and sold the slaves.  That mostly came from Europeans and muslims, right?

And you would think that in those 200 years the Christians descendants of the Europeans would have learned that slavery was wrong, instead of creating the bloodiest war this country ever saw, only to lose said war, and then erect statues to honor the losers. And then, two hundred year later, their descendants are still trying to pass that bigotry and hatred under the guise of heritage. Apparently the good Christians learned nothing in almost 400 years.

Times like this it helps to follow Allah, they are still in the business and get a pass from the MDL.

Slavery was never legal under English law within the bounds of England and Wales. However, the legal status of slaves brought to England and Wales was ambiguous until the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. At the turn of the 18th century, around about the time that the bust was executed, Chief Justice Holt ruled in a series of cases that a man cannot hold property in another, and that (at least theoretically, if not always in practice) a slave became free upon reaching England. Now, this does not mean that men and women were not treated as slaves in practice. Further, the law took a turn later on in the 18th century when the High Court overruled the Holt rulings and stated that an action for trover (i.e., recapture of chattels) does lie where the chattel sought was a slave acquired outside of England and Wales. Additionally, while it is indisputable that William III reigned during a massive expansion of slavery in the Empire, it would have been legally impossible for him to own a slave in England at the time.  (Source: I graduated from law school in England. I do not know the law of Scotland and Northern Ireland.)

Turning to the bust itself, it is described by the Royal Collection thus:

Is he an enslaved man or a "personal servant"? It is difficult to know. He wears a slave's collar. But his legal status (at that time) would not have been that of a slave. In all likelihood, his ability to leave his position was restricted.

No, it is unclear what his status was. We do not know who this person was. We can make some educated guesses, given that slavery was illegal within England and Wales at the time the bust was sculpted, and bearing in mind that in reality such Africans were likely working in situations where it was difficult to leave -- but not impossible, as there is case law where those brought to England sued for their freedom and won. In the absence of evidentiary proof, we cannot say yes, that man was definitely a slave. If proven wrong, I will be happy to accept that I was in error.

A compassionate involuntary employee!

Again, we do not know this man's status. Nor do we know whether he was compassionate.
