More examples of absolute politically correct abject stupidity

ESPN confirmed Tuesday it had decided to pull play-by-play announcer Robert Lee from the University of Virginia's Sept. 2 football game with William & Mary because it might be seen as insensitive because of the similarity of the announcer's name to Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

"We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name," ESPN's statement read, according to Clay Travis, host of Fox Sports Radio's "Outkick the Coverage."--"Snip"

From ESPN exec.

there was a reasonable possibility his name would be subjected to meme jokes. Think about it, Robert Lee comes to town to do a game in Charlottesville.

yeah, imagine the memes. Storm in a teacup. He hasn't been fired. No biggie.

When people who think they're entitled to success start losing they act desperate.. wouldn't surprise me as the losses pile up.

William III, also known as William of Orange prior to his ascension to the Crown of Great Britain alongside his wife, Mary II, did not own slaves.

Did he not rule the country during the height of the British slave trade?

In a Google book it's mentioned that he apparently had a favorite slave and had a bust placed at Hampton Court.

Slavery was never legal under English law within the bounds of England and Wales. However, the legal status of slaves brought to England and Wales was ambiguous until the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. At the turn of the 18th century, around about the time that the bust was executed, Chief Justice Holt ruled in a series of cases that a man cannot hold property in another, and that (at least theoretically, if not always in practice) a slave became free upon reaching England. Now, this does not mean that men and women were not treated as slaves in practice. Further, the law took a turn later on in the 18th century when the High Court overruled the Holt rulings and stated that an action for trover (i.e., recapture of chattels) does lie where the chattel sought was a slave acquired outside of England and Wales. Additionally, while it is indisputable that William III reigned during a massive expansion of slavery in the Empire, it would have been legally impossible for him to own a slave in England at the time.  (Source: I graduated from law school in England. I do not know the law of Scotland and Northern Ireland.)

Turning to the bust itself, it is described by the Royal Collection thus:

Quote

A coloured marble bust of an enslaved man, his head turned and looking up to the left; wearing a turban with plumes, collar about his neck, a shirt with a jewelled collar and wrap tied about; resting on a waisted turned marble socle. Black servants were frequently found in noble and royal households from the late seventeenth century and this figure has traditionally been identified as a favourite personal servant of William III (r.1609-1702). The Moor’s feathered turban and jewelled band indicate high, perhaps royal status, but the collar unmistakably marks him as a slave.

Is he an enslaved man or a "personal servant"? It is difficult to know. He wears a slave's collar. But his legal status (at that time) would not have been that of a slave. In all likelihood, his ability to leave his position was restricted.
