I am Australian, living and working in Canada on a work permit visa (IEC, International Experience Canada). Basically, there is no work in my line of expertise in Vancouver, and wish to work in the states. My questions are; Can I apply for a work permit in the states, even though I am an Australian in a Canada? Also, could I get work in Design in America -as this is not a 'specialized skill)? Thank you.

you can apply for jobs whilst in here. But the chance of an average designer without any status to get sponsored a job in the States is minimum.

The States doesn't have labour shortage. and besides, if you cannot find a job "in line of expertise" in Canada, you probably will have a difficult time finding one down here.

@mcdull Hmmm, thanks for your advice, but because there is no work in Design in Canada, has no relation to the design economy in the states. I think there is quite a difference from Vancouver, to lets say, New York, lol.

Um no, they are very similar actually. In fact, you are best to build a portfolio in canad a and then use that to get a work permit in the USA. Like an O1 showing extraordinary abilities. Having ZERO or limited experience will not give u a work permit

Unfortunately l, the USA does not give out work permits like other countries. And I know Vancouver and Toronto well. Lots of opportunities to get some work and experience there. Perhaps u consider going back to school in the USA?

Main difference is your lack of US work authorisation.

Not at all. I find it's difficult to swallow that there isn't any design job in Canada. Have you look around? Like around?

@caliliving oh okay, Vancouver and New York are very similar in terms of design.  I'll be sure to let Anna Wintour know this on the way to YVR Airport. You also don't know what line of Design work I am seeking, Design can mean many things. I know you Canadians are proud of your country, but some things it lacks I'm afraid.

Regardless of whether or not they are similarge design environments, it does not appear at all likely that a US work visa is in your near future, so it's rather a moot point.
