white passport process question....

Hi Group members,

 

I have a question regarding the process to file re-entry travel documents.

 

I'm US citizen and I applied for my parents to get a green card and finally, they are here in us but they want to return back home but they can't come every year to not lose the green card I heard about a white passport.

They have a flight back to home on Sept 29 and I want to file the application for them. We live in California. 

 

My question is how long usually it takes from the time of filing the application to time for a biometric appointment. I want to know if they can do that before they travel.

There is no such thing as a white passport. The green card is to reside in the US. If they want to leave for 1 or 2 years they can get a reentry permit. However, they cannot use this more than once really.

 

They cannot leave for more than 6 months in a normal scenario. In other words, they need to live more 6 or more months in the US. They need to submit taxes every year regardless of how long they are in the US. 

 

You need to do serious research about this. A lot of people loose their green cards for being careless.

The "white passport" is just another name for the old book-style re-entry permit (where the cover used to be white).  It's not white, anymore, by the way, and not put into book form for all instances (some diplomats still have the white-cover booklet)

 

They need a re-entry permit.  That being said, a re-entry permit is not for the purposes of residing outside of the US for lengths of time--it's used as a travel document while a case is pending, and to return to the US to proceed with the pending case.

Generally about a month, on average.  Sometimes it can be longer or shorter.
