Hello everyone,

My 2 year GC expired on 10/22/2016 and my i-751 application is still pending. I plan on traveling to Canada on September 21st. I have the expired GC. the extension letter, the i551 stamp which extends my status to next year and eTA which is required for US PR with my citizenship. So my question is, would these documents be enough for me to enter Canada ? Would they still recognize the stamp or the extension letter since my GC is expired ? Because I would need a visa if they don't recognize my permanent residence status...

THank you

According to the CBSA's Guide for Transporters, the expired green card with I-797 extension letter is acceptable as proof of US residence and qualifies you for the Canadian visa exemption. It's worth printing out and taking a copy of that guide too as airline staff aren't necessarily aware of the rules.

Thank you so much. I will print out the guide for sure just in case...

I have the same situation, green card expired, got i551 stamp. I applied for an eTA first on my British passport and it wasn't immediately approved, then I applied again with my Hong Kong passport and it took a whole day to get approved.

Although my both of my passports get Visa free to Canada regardless of US permanent residency, I think Canada did have to verify your US permanent residency status before approving your eTA
