What a convenient article on American politics by a foreign contributor. Ironic.

 

But here is a proposal. If the purpose of the confederate statues is to keep history alive, and if erasing them would be akin to redacting history, why not insist on historical accuracy instead?

 

I can understand that many people want these symbols removed, because they glorify those who history has condemned. But for the sake of argument, if these statues are part of our history, shouldn't we insist that the complete history be told?

 

I would propose that, to ensure historical accuracy, the slaves who were oppressed, raped, and killed by their owners also be represented, perhaps by virtue of placing their statues, depicting their daily routine. Bent over toiling the fields, unshod and uncared for under the sun, women raped by their masters, and children denied their infancies. All these scenes should be included under the rearing hooves of the horses these heroes of the Civil War mount so gallantly.

 

Why not then adorn our squares and parks with statues and work of equal historical value, and add a scene of a typical slave market at every American city in the south, the riches of which were only made possible by slavery?

 

Why not complete the monument at Stone Mountain in Georgia, and carve the faces of all the slaves who died as a result of disease and mistreatment or excessive punishment by their masters. Why not create a ring depicting all the bodies of those slaves who perished in transit aboard sickness-infested ships, and cover each and every one of them with a confederate flag.

 

Why, as a people who care so much and so deeply about the historical significance of these facts, don't we create a quilt made of confederate flags and write the name and age of each an every slave that was sacrificed, for the pride of the flag?

 

When we do any of these things, we will be able to represent ourselves correctly as keepers and guardians of history.

 

Until then, it all looks, smells, and tastes of white supremacist baloney.

I know what you mean.  I am not a big fan of Lenin or Stalin statues myself, but I understand we need to keep those in our history so we do not repeat the mistakes we made.

Then you should keep statues of Lenin and Stalin in your history. Unless of course, Putin is opposed to the idea, in which case, I'd think there is little the Russian people can do about it.

One could argue that the statues' are the inch given to the losers on the wrong side of history.

You don't even need to argue that. The statues were the consolation prize given to the losers during the reconstruction that followed the Civil War.

 

Did they learn their lesson? No, and as a result they came up with Jim Crow laws.

 

Very reminiscent of the "wins" we are currently seeing... and the ensuing hissy fits... LOL.
