The wussifying of America

Here's some more details.[/url] I'll recap briefly. The RA who died seems to have done so confronting the gunman. The professor who threw himself in front of the gunman as he entered, so his students could jump out the fourth floor window. The kid who had the presence of mind when he heard gunshots in the hallway to command his classmates to barricade the doors. The kids who -- some of whom, while already shot -- slammed their classroom door shut to keep the gunman from reentering. The kid who, while holding the door, was shot in the leg, where the bullet pierced the artery, and survived because he fashioned a tourniquet out of a cord. The girl in the first classroom who was smart enough to play dead when it was clear she couldn't do anything else.

Now, none of them tackled the gunman. Maybe that makes them wusses in your book. Seems to me that several survivors of the attack have others to thank for their lives, not to mention we don't know if some tried to rush the gunmen and failed.

I think these examples are exactly what Slim is wanting Americans to do, TAKE ACTION. Tackling the gunman would have been suicide, but they took action and simply didn't cower. Because these brave souls did something lives were probably saved. As Americans, we cannot simply wait for the police to "rescue" us, by then its too late.

 --seriously. I like this:

I'm going to get slaughtered for this, and I'll say first off, save it. That's not what this thread is about. All respect and prayers to the victims in VA and elsewhere. I do not condone violence or violent acts, and would prefer a world at peace.

...which of course precedes paragraphs of a) disrespect to the VA Tech victims and b ) lots of condoning violence.

As to the original message of action-film-inspired slurry, I would never teach my kids to fight back against a school shooter. I'd say, hey, I love you, so don't get shot. You want the parents of America to teach their children that they're "wusses" if they don't tackle an armed crazy person?

i think even Rush would disagree with brother Slim...

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

If anything, we need more guns, not less. If other students had guns to defend

themselves with, this would never have happened.

That argument is really tired IMO. After all the paranoia and fear after 9/11 most people (the world over) carry on their daily lives as normal. Why because its a fact of life that things come out of left-field. Why allow terrorists and random disturbed people to change the way you live? Seems to me you're endorsing the idea that people should live in fear.

Moreover, just because guns are legal doesn't mean that someone is necessarily going to want to get one. I can speak for myself on that one...

The worst thing the US can do is end up like many European nations. That is appeasing everyone under the sun, just to keep a false sense of peace..

The title of this thread is really funny.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

So we should just be sending our kids off to school with a gun tucked along with their lunchboxes....much easier than dealing with the real issue.

I think I'd hope that my kids would keep their heads and use whatever resources they have to survive and save others. If we have a son who takes after C., then he'll be a big muscular guy and if he's coming along from baseball practice and is behind the gunman, I hope he'd wale on him a bit. If we have a daughter (or a son, I suppose) who's my size, I hope she's the one with the command skills to order her classmates to barricade a door.

5'5'', 125. I'm pretty tough, but you wouldn't get a second shot at knocking over a gunman.

I don't like it.... gun control stinks to high heaven. I don't want this country to turn into a

UK-style police state à la "V for Vendetta."

I know...my husband feels the same way...yet I find it kind of disturbing that he has lived here in the UK for the past 7 yrs without the 'need' for a gun in the house, yet when we move back to the US we 'must' have a gun in the house. The closest I ever got to a gun was when he signed me onto a base some years ago....I was all wide eyed..
