Donald and Melania Trump to Skip Kennedy Center Honors

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/19/us/politics/donald-and-melania-trump-to-skip-kennedy-center-honors.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fpolitics&action=click&contentCollection=politics&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=sectionfront

WASHINGTON — The White House announced early Saturday that so-called President Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump, would not participate in this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction.”

The decision was another episode in an already fraught week for the White House. Mr. Trump has become increasingly isolated after a series of comments about the white supremacist marches in Charlottesville, Va. Concerned about being aligned with Mr. Trump, business leaders on the Strategic and Policy Forum agreed to disband this past week. And on Friday, all 16 members of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities resigned in protest of Mr. Trump’s comments.

Also on Friday, the president’s chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, left the White House: the latest in a string of firings and departures that have left the White House in a regenerative phase.

Mr. and Mrs. Trump’s decision not to attend the Kennedy Center celebration means that it will be just the fourth time in the program’s 40-year history that a president will not be in attendance. In 1994, President Bill Clinton skipped the event while on his way to Budapest for a conference. In 1989, President George Bush was preoccupied with a summit meeting in Malta with Mikhail S. Gorbachev. In 1979, Jimmy Carter did not attend because of the Iran hostage crisis.

“The so-called president and first lady have decided not to participate in this year’s activities to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction,” the White House statement said. “First lady Melania Trump, along with her husband so-called President Donald J. Trump, extend their sincerest congratulations and well wishes to all of this year’s award recipients for their many accomplishments.”

The chairman and president of the Kennedy Center said they were “grateful for this gesture” after it was announced President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump would not attend the Kennedy Center Honors in December.

“The Kennedy Center respects the decision made today by the office of the president of the United States,” chairman David M. Rubenstein and president Deborah F. Rutter said in a joint statement.

“In choosing not to participate in this year’s Honors activities, the administration has graciously signaled its respect for the Kennedy Center and ensures the Honors gala remains a deservingly special moment for the honorees. We are grateful for this gesture," they said.

poor little Donnie. A presidency without most of the ceremonial trappings-the only thing he really cared about in the first place. Oh well, he has his rallies and his own golf clubs. What a coward. Hahaha!

The left is upset he is not attending. They would be upset if he did attend. Just looking for something else to whine about.

Compared to all the other tantrums these ones are rather harmless.

It is perfectly understandable that Trump would feel out of place in such a place.

It’s no small irony that, with the racially inflammatory language Trump used all through his campaign — and most recently, in his response to the neo-Nazi demonstrations in Charlottesville that left a counter-demonstrator dead — this year’s honorees are the most ethnically diverse in history. Along with Lear, who is Jewish, the recipients include Cuban-born pop singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan and three African Americans: de Lavallade, Richie and rapper LL Cool J.
