Driving license

Hi...I'm sure this question has been asked before but do you have to take a driving test in order to get a Florida license? I'm moving out to Florida for good at the end of sept.  I have a full UK driving license but just wondered about when I get there I'll need a car to get about once I'm settled in. Wondered what the rules were.

Thanks :)

You can read the rules here.

Expect to take both the written and driving test.

You can drive on your UK DL for 30 days from when you enter then you must have a FL DL.

Just be aware that a lot of states wants the EAD before they give out DL so there may be a long period where you can't drive.

But look at it on the webpage. Some state do it right away and other don't.

You can drive on your UK license for 30 days or apply for a temporary license that is valid until your I-94 expires (after 90 days of your arrival)

Florida, like most states, want to see a employment authorization card (I-765 or sometimes listed as I-766) or a valid green card to issue a valid DL.

Ahh thankyou. I reckon I will be waiting a while to drive then once I get there as I will have to file for adjustment of status first. Will just have to get my other half to chauffeur me around :P

We just went through this in Maryland. Everyone said in Maryland we needed an EAD or GC but my husband and I figured we would just go for it and see what happens (if nothing else than he would get to drive the length of his valid I-94). He got a temporary 10 month license with his valid I-94 combined with his NOA1 for AOS. We were pretty excited and it was pretty unexpected. I think I found more people put there negative DMV stories than positive ones, so it is def worth a try!

It also couldn't have been better timing because a week after his Australian license expired we were hit by another driver and our car was totaled (everyone was okay). But all I could think was thank goodness we followed Maryland laws and had him insured or it could have been a mess for his AOS.
