The mayor's concern is about the safety and security of the people of Baltimore (paraphrased)?  I would think she should worry more about getting adequate staffing of the city's police force.

- Feeling Good

- Doing Good

The choice is obvious.

Excellent point. Surprised Trump and company are not trying to add the highjackers names to the 911 Memorial. After all, Donald Trump might curry favor with the Muslims he saw dancing in the streets after the attack, start turning his tanking support numbers by adding them for 2020!

Face it. In the eyes of the so-called president, there must have been some bad people inside the WTC1 & 2.

ETA: the above contains a dose of scarcasm.

I understand that the issue of slavery cannot be separated from the Confederacy, but I find the comparisons to Nazi Germany or 911 extreme. In many ways, the confederacy can be compared to Ireland, Bosnia, or even the American Colonies.

The only difference is that they failed, and whilst history is often written by the victor, in this case many of the memorials represent a part of Reconstruction after the war.

I think you can look at the memorials and see their individual context. Those built in the 1870s, 1880 and 1890s were created by the families of war dead. Those created in say the 1910s and 1920s probably have more of a racist backing to them.

Robert E. Lee himself wasn't an evil man. History notes that he was a kind man who chose the Confederacy over the Union only because his state of Virginia chose it (and apparently his family was pro Union). Which brings up another topic - the notion of being a traitor or not. At that point in the US, it has to be understood that you were a citizen and loyal to your state first and the US second. They had a completely different mind set on this to us today. The civil war was a turning point for the average citizen, where loyalty changed from state to country.

Finally, I noted there was a comment about whether the defeated should have memorials. Generally the answer is yes. Germany was brought up as an example. While its true there are no Nazi memorials around, there are many from the first world war. Kaiser Wilhem and Hindenburg even had memorials.
