In a stealth purging of history, the city of Baltimore removed four Confederate statues from city property under cover of night early Tuesday morning.

City crews began the destruction of the monuments just before midnight and finished by 5:30 a.m., the Hill reported.

The city council quietly approved the removal late on Monday in a unanimous vote.

“It’s done,” Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh told the Baltimore Sun. “They needed to come down. My concern is for the safety and security of our people. We moved as quickly as we could.”

“I did not want to endanger people in my own city,” the African American mayor said. “I had begun discussions with contractors and so forth about how long it would take to remove them. I am a responsible person, so we moved as quickly as we could. ”

The statues removed included a memorial to Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney as well as Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

Now that the terrible statues have been removed, Baltimore is now a safe city. I imagine crime will plummet now that the racists have been purged.

this is a dispicable and disgusting act of destroying our beautiful culture, which was not really apart of the history of the civil war but a beautiful expression of white pride that started around the time that the supreme Court let folks in the south know that segregation is doomed.

I wonder if Supreme Leader will suggest that the allies should re-erect the Nazi statues that were destroyed by the anti-fascist fascist GIs during WWII. LOL.

No, Mr. LePage. Leaving the confederate symbols prominently displayed in our cities is akin to adding the name of the high jackers to the names engraved in the WTC memorial, and honoring their memories, because after all, they also died.

Excellent point. Surprised Trump and company are not trying to add the highjackers names to the 911 Memorial. After all, Donald Trump might curry favor with the Muslims he saw dancing in the streets after the attack, start turning his tanking support numbers by adding them for 2020!

You're trying way too hard. Gotta tone it down a tad if you want a reaction.

The mayor's concern is about the safety and security of the people of Baltimore (paraphrased)?  I would think she should worry more about getting adequate staffing of the city's police force.
