California's high tax rate makes them unfriendly to seniors on a fixed budget. Florida overall is tax friendly and of course it's warm and sunny, low priced real estate helps as well..

I think it's funny that Worcester Mass was even on this article's radar. I've never met anyone that stated they were going to retire in Worcester, there's nothing there.

Honolulu. That's a winner, although it's an island.... LOL....

Palau is cool.

Unfortunately it is only US cities. My wife and I will likely retire abroad.

Washington State isn't a bad place to retire. The cost of living isn't really low but it's not astronomical either. No state income tax (like Florida), so helpful for retirement accounts.

I'd much rather retire to Washington State than Florida, even with the weather (but then again I'm from Oregon so I'm used to the weather).

How about a small island?

Where did you have in mind?  We've talked about Thailand or Indonesia actually. Though I imagine Bali in 30 years is going to be horrible (it basically already is).

We were also thinking somewhere along the Mediterranean but now with the Brexit issue it may become more complicated for us to move there. We'll have to wait and see. Retirement is still a few decades away :)

I'm looking at buying some waterfront property on Guam, I hear it's pretty cheap these days. Then I can proclaim that I can see north Korea from my house!

I think it is funny and amusing how the three cities I bolded are in the same county here in California. They basically are all known for having issues with crime, Rancho Cucamonga is still better than Fontana or SB but worse than Upland.

The wife and I have already decided when we retire it will be in Philippines. Hopefully it will be within the next 15 years when I will have 25 years in federal service, and I will be 48 years old. That way I can live off of my pension from the VA, 401k, and my wife's soon to be pension from her future job.

As you're American, Palau is great if you love diving and want access to other islands in the Pacific. If you want to be closer to home, the Cayman Islands? Teddy hangs out there
