Should this include charities I've worked with? What about professional groups (eg. I was an "Ambassador" for a brand at one point)

i asked the same type of questions in another forum. YES vs NO, 50:50

 

For those memberships with academic or non-profit organizations, i presume USCIS will only look at the section you choose "YES". if those organizations are professional group, USCIS will not dedicate to check. 

 

as a professional in academic,  i do have some memberships with research organization/foundation,but they expired already as you need to renew the membership fee every year or it expires. Just in case, i probably just put in 1-2 memberships there as proof of being invovled in the academic field in the past. Otherwise officer will raise questions like, why didn't you have  any academic members with research foundation ? so the office may predict by looking at your career or current employer/ current title .
