Written test for driver's license online in Texas?

Good time of day or night, everyone!

I have yet another driving license question, probably a millionth, but I can't seem to find the information I'm searching for just by googling.

I keep hearing there is an option of passing a written test for a learner's permit online in the state of Texas, but all I can find is that you can pass the test after attending the driver's school as a part of their school program. I've searched the DPS site, but all that came up was scheduling an appointment online, with you having to come in person to take the written test.

Is it possible to schedule an online written test through DPS without attending the school or am I missing something? ( I am over 25 years old, therefore, as I understand, there is no such requirement as to attend driver's ed, I am currently studying the handbook, as for the practice - my husband is going to teach me to drive).

All states have a written exam for learner's permit based on the handbook. It is usually with the computer. It is the same one that people take from drivers' license (minus the actual driving test)

I understand that it's on the computer, the question is can the written part of it be online without coming personally to the office?(only coming later for the driving part) I haven't found any links for scheduling an online test so far, maybe I'm missing something. If it's only possible with the school then I'll have to sign up for school, but if there is a chance of taking it without school online, I'd prefer that.

No, it cannot be online. They do it the same day that you present the documents and they take your picture for the actual license.

Thank you for the explanation! I'll have to sign up for school then.

Can you imagine if it could be done online? No way to prove that the person getting the permit took the test. Are you talking about the online prep course?

Have you looked at the following link?

http://www.dps.texas.gov/administration/driver_licensing_control/rolodex/getinlineonline.htm

Why not go to your local DMV and take the test there. No need to sign up for driving school unless that's what you want to do.

I just heard from multiple people that it could be done so, it surprised me too, so I was looking up the information on this. Thank you for the link, but yes, I've visited it before and seen that one can schedule an appointment online to come there personally later. I just wanted to know the opportunities of not standing in line for a really long time as my husband would have to take another day off work just for me and he already has to take me to the new medical exam, interview, etc. Taking a day off work every week isn't that great. Seems like a driving school may be an option as they offer to pass the test with them(as long as they are accredited) and they are usually available on the weekend.

That's the life of bringing an immigrant spouse who doesn't drive. I still do it now, 6 years later. Hopefully my wife will get her driver's license this year as the kids are older.

We've used a driving school before, and the nice thing was that they drove to our residence to pick up my wife.

Yeah, I didn't need a car back in the other country, everything was in a walk distance(or train, which was much faster than a car) so I'm really new to it and, frankly, afraid of real driving.

Good luck to your wife! Wow, what a nice driving school! It's great to see that someone understands the situation; hopefully, I will become a driver soon too. Even after getting the license, there is still a long way to go before I'm comfortable and confident.

Hello,

Here's some necessary information to know about the Texas DPS Driving Test: https://www.virtualdriveoftexas.com/written-drivers-test/ You may also have a little practice part and try online driving tests > https://driving-tests.org/texas/ local choice is preferable, of course.

If you're going to choose a driving school later, you may need to compare some driving schools and the conditions they offer here drivingschoolnear.me. I for one chose Island Driving School (in Texas City).

Best,

John
