Exactly, thank you.

CB

i am still unclear why the moving of a thread to an appropriately defined forum is causing so much confusion. what am i missing?

I'm losing the plot myself... :help:

Beats me. I track my own topics through my profile anyway, not by going to the forum where I posted it.

I'm thinking it's just a matter of people not being all that comfortable/familiar with the navigation tools available.

Good god people, can't we leave it as Ewok suggested at the beginning of this 4 page thread?

don't know what to tell you there .. sorry if to you my suggestion is going against the grain .. besides Captain Ewok liked the idea on page one

NO EXTRA POSTS needed saying this is where the thread went. We're trying to de-clutter for pete's sake. No movers should be named either. It's not a power trip, it's an organizing thing.

I would rather not see extra posts and don't believe a mover needs to include their name either, the thread list is where I would like the current location of a MOVED post notated

I will say it again, we cannot spoon feed every ADULT on here, if they can't use the search feature in the forums themselves, then they have much bigger problems.

for researchers yes, but for members considering submitting a post that use the k-1 forum (or whichever is their choice) exclusively, what is so difficult about educating them about the appropriate forum where to make like posts when you move one?

i am still unclear why the moving of a thread to an appropriately defined forum is causing so much confusion. what am i missing?

Ok. I don't think you're doing/saying anything wrong...but we are totally misunderstanding each other or miscommunicating in some way, because I feel like I'm beating my head against a brick wall, and I'm certain you feel much the same.

How do you propose to leave a message with where the thread was moved to (as you DID suggest, many times) without making a post??? I think a lot of us seem to be confused on that. Whether it's left by a mover, or automatically generated (which i doubt can even be done...dunno) there has to be a POST. There is NO reason for a post. YOu keep citing that we should educate people. I know my 8th grader could find the name of the forum he's in, and he's never even been on this site...so I'm sure other VJ users can as well! That's not personal toward you, either...it's just a fact.

Also, you DID state several times that it would be good if a mover would leave a message saying where it was moved to. Like I wrote in the other thread...no way to do that without the movers display name showing. I, for one, wouldn't be willing to subject myself to that.

You know where on the thread list (when you click on the forum view and all of the threads are listed) and you see the flag "moved" displayed on the reference link? Rather than saying just moved, I would like to see it say "moved to ______" instead of just moved..

I think a lot of us seem to be confused on that. Whether it's left by a mover, or automatically generated (which i doubt can even be done...dunno) there has to be a POST.

You cannot make a notation in the title or elsewhere in the reference link without generating an actual post?

There is NO reason for a post.

I agree

YOu keep citing that we should educate people.

and I truly think it would help some with incorrectly posted messages and let people know where specifically to find relevant information. In turn, if they have a question or are considering making a post about a similar issue, they know by looking at the thread list where to go exactly (they wouldn't even have to open the message to know where to go) In my opinion this would create an environment of less posts by members in the incorrect forums, less moving by the organizers/scouts, more familiarity for the newer members with the navigation tools and promote the proper utilization of the correct forums for their intended purpose.

I know my 8th grader could find the name of the forum he's in, and he's never even been on this site...so I'm sure other VJ users can as well! That's not personal toward you, either...it's just a fact.

My 9 year old twins boys and 10 year old daughter more than likely could to .. I guess we are so lucky

Also, you DID state several times that it would be good if a mover would leave a message saying where it was moved to.

I have never said a word about a mover making a post, nothing .. nada .. I have always stated the "thread list" is where the notation should be made .. right on the reference link

Like I wrote in the other thread...no way to do that without the movers display name showing. I, for one, wouldn't be willing to subject myself to that.

I don't blame you at all and would never ask you to do that

I just got back here and I see you just posted as well...so don't think I'm following you around waiting to "pounce"! ;)

Anyway....I thought that is what you were suggesting long ago...movers to make a post saying where the thread was moved to...your concern was it would be too much "work" for themovers. That was never a concern to me, but I think I FINALLY see where we're having some of our miscommunication anyway....

When we move a thread, we simply click YES or NO to leave a link behind...we DONT actually *type what* the link says....know what I mean? So....for that to be changed, it would have to be something Ewok could change...and I'm not sure the board is "smart" enough to know that we just said...move it to Off Topic, for example, and it could read "this thread moved to Off Topic" at the drop of a hat...as we *could* have chosen any forum at all. Maybe the board does have that technology...again, dunno. Cap would have to be asked about that.

Yes, I do understand that you cannot alter the reference link now that you have told me.

ok, now what do you think of the idea if it is possible? would it benefit the community?

If Cap. Ewok says it's possible I think it would be just great! Really has nothing at all to do with us...if he could enable some kind of feature where it *always* says the same thing except for the forum title...and then once the forum is chosen (that it's being moved to) it inserts that in the wording...I can't see a reason why *anyone* would be opposed to that. There's already wording where the link is left, so if the wording could somehow get changed around a bit to be more beneficial, I don't know why anyone could think that's a bad idea!

I have a feeling a few of us just had our wires VERY crossed with what you were meaning...also compounded by the fact that you didn't realize we didn't actual type the text...moved..etc. Much more clear now. Ahhhhhhhh. :) M.

edited to say wording not working!

Thank you so much, for taking the time to truly understand my suggestion .. it is so great to have someone else with me on this.

Thank you also for clarifying that you do not have the ability to edit the reference link for a moved post.

No problem...I agree with Meauxna...at least you are thinking about things and trying to help! We don't really have anything to do with anything as far as inner workings around here...if we see a misplaced post we're supposed to move it somewhere else and that's the long and short of it! That's why it was really difficult to understand what all the fuss was about...but I think when the others who have participated in this thread read this, they will see what you're getting at as well. (I guess I shouldn't assume they didn't see before!! I guess I'm just thinking some of them may have been thinking what I was....)

Anyway, all good if Cap could do it...it really wouldn't take up any more space at all...just different wording.

I'm out of here...have a great night! :) M.

Yep - I knew what CB was getting at. That's why i suggested if that cannot be done automatically, maybe it would be possible to allow you guys to change just the title of the thread to include "moved to ____ forum." I know it's in a slightly different location, but at least it's still on the thread list.

There is no way without editing the board software to change the title automatically to indicate it was moved. Maybe a custom modification could be made and in the future I may look at that because it is a good thought :).

What if we focus more on teaching people WHERE to post *in the first place*? Make it more clear, make it abundantly clear, leave no question?

I know the toys are fun to play with, but we are not getting to the root of the issue: How to organize the information here to make it the most useful for the most people (is that what we're trying to do?).

The guidelines for moving threads should only have to be in effect on a temporary basis. Isn't our ideal that all users post in the most appropriate place to start with? Less moderation = more?

I think that's great! But how?

Yeah. It's not like 80% of newbies ever read the guides/search anyhow...

It goes back to my idea of newbies cannot post for a week after joining.

Maybe we need to create an "entry portal" folks must through when they register.

We are all used to dealing with reading a TOS or accepting an agreement when we register on a website. I'm sure people frequently whiz by those.

What if we created a BRIEF tutorial that had to be read before registering? And having a function built onto those pages wherein each page wouldn't close for say - 60 seconds - giving the reader "mandatory" time to absorb the material.
