Marriage license after K1

Hello,

Just had a question for those of you who came in with a K1 visa. My fiancée just recently had her K1 approved and she is planning to come to the US soon. Our plan is to do a courthouse wedding and try to get our AOS/AP/EAD papers in as soon as possible. The issue is that my city hall requires proof of address when applying for a marriage license, which means my fiancee’s name would have to be on a bank statement, utility bill, etc. Unfortunately, it looks like I can’t add my fiancée to any of my accounts here until she has a SSN. However my understanding with the SSN is that we should wait about 2 weeks until we apply and then it’ll be another 1 to 2 weeks to receive the card. This would mean getting the marriage license 3 to 4 weeks after my fiancée enters the US.

In order to get the marriage license sooner, would it make sense to apply for the marriage certificate using my fiancee’s address from her home country? Or will this just cause problems later and would it be better to wait the few weeks and have her use my US address?

Any suggestions, comments, or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Once her social security card comes you should be able to use that as proof of address. Save the part that you detach the card from and use it.

That's unusual to have that requirement for both parties. Is there another nearby state that you can get married that doesn't have that requirement?

I would perhaps call city hall or the courthouse and explain your situation. They might be able to give you some guidance. Also, if you rent, you might be able to add her to your lease. That's what I am doing for my fiance for his proof of address.
